The Superchips tuner is O.K., but if you want mileage gains timing needs to be advanced. In most cases you will need to use a higher octane fuel. For a better computer reprogramming go to a fully reprogramable item such as IDA. You can change your timing, fuel mapping, rev and speed limiting.

Larry and Sid - thanks for weighing in. I'll try that crank sensor mod but I want to try the performance setting first and see what it does. If it'll run with 89 and the performance setting, that would probably work for me. 89 octane by itself got me considerably better mileage (on the road, anyway) than the 87. I'm already running APP3923's, brass cap and rotor, a fastman, K&N drop-in, Amsoil.

I did the crank sensor mod prior to installing the Superchips. With the mod I can't get by with 89 octane in either performance mode but just barely. If I removed a couple of degrees it would probably be fine.

It would be nice to know how much advance the tuner gives and at what rpm's.

My dad passed away on the 23rd down in GA, and I didn't drive the truck for several days while tending to his funeral. When I DID get back home, I filled it with 89 AND loaded the performance settings. To my surprise, it runs well on the 89 - no ping whatsoever, and that's without getting the crank sensor mod done. It's performing better with no "stagger" when I punch it, and it didn't downshift even once on the trip down to Charlotte and back when I had to go to NJ overnight last week. Filled it again tonight, and it averaged 17.6 MPG combined city/highway on that last tank. Tomorrow, I fly out of Greensboro. There are several long hills between here and there that it used to downshift on, so I'll have a better handle on how it's doing. In terms of barking tires, etc., it still hasn't - but then, that wasn't what I was looking for. And, I have to admit - the 17.6 probably could have been better because I did get my foot in it a few times - just because I could!

I noticed, N56629, that mine seems to not make that last shift until right at 55. Could be because I took the stock tire settings, and it's got the 16" rims with big Michelins on it. Speedo might be off a mile or two.

I'm going to have to fi-diddle with it for a couple-three more tanks, and then I'll do a new post reporting findings.
