I need to trailer a Jeep Cherokee back to NY with me from MI. I have a 98 Dakota Club cab, 2wd, v6 auto with a trans cooler installed (tranny completely rebuilt about 15k ago). I wanted to rent a uhaul passenger vehicle trailer to bring it back, how do you think my truck will handle this, if at all? Thanks!

You will weight against you to begin with with a club cab, factor in a 175 FWHP engine over hills, and you are not going to have a good time:) It is do-able, but it will take a while, keep the tranny out of OD, and you won't fry it. Other than that, how do you plan on hooking to your truck? You have a properly rated hitch? If the Cherokee has an all metal bumper, I would personnally opt out of a tow dolley or trailer, and go for a tow bar. It's is easier on both vehicles.

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

I used to tow my 72 Dart back and forth to the racetrack 100 miles each way and had no problems. The Dart weighed 3600 lbs and the trailer was around 1500 lbs. Don't try to use O/D and you will be fine. I have 3:55 gears and at the time no mods at all. Pulling a car on a trailer is much different than pulling a holiday trailer, the aoerodynamics are much better with a car/trailer setup, not as much wind resistance.

you should be able to do it,depends on the hills[steep and long will drag you down]and give yourself some room for braking if non on the trailer

i hauled a dodge avenger on a dolly 300+mi from NH to ME with a [125hp] 89 dak 4x4 with 3.91s,auto,ran 75mph most of way in OD, i just shut it off to get up to speed and bad hills, slowest was 50-55mph in hills
[trans has a transgo kit and factory cooler]
also the car and dolly will weigh less then the trailer and cherokee[older cherokee,s don,t weigh
alot,unibody,newer one i don,t no]

just to give you a idear before you strike out with it

dont use the full car trailer.... the jeep cher. being 4x4 just get a dolly and put the transfer case in netrual .... you'll be cutting the towing weight down a good bit... you figure a trailer is about 1500 and the jeep being 3500 guve or take a few pounds and a dolly is about 500 give or take a few pounds.... Xing out the trialer your cutting 1500 pounds and will heave an easier time towing....

Don't some Jeeps have a 4WD system that won't allow towing because there is no disengaging?

I towed a Jeep Comanche pickup (pretty much same-same as a Cherokee) about 200 miles with my old 92 Dakota 2 wheel drive regular cab V6, using a U-haul tow dolly. It towed a lot easier than I expected, even on hills....course that may have been because the speed sensor died 1/3 of the way in on the trip and I had no torque convertor lockup or overdrive ;( My .02 would be use a tow dolly, leave the transfer case alone and disconnect the rear driveshaft.
