I have an 87 Dakota with 77K miles on it. I would like to change to synthetic oil because of its superior viscosity performance and its ability to clean/keep clean an engine. Before I do, any thoughts on the pros and cons?

Depends, did you use straight weight oil before (i.e 30 or 40 weight)? If so, the detergents they put in the modern multi-weight oils may clean off deposits that may cause your truck to burn or leak oil. If not, go for it, there are plenty to choose from: Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc to name some of the best of them.

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Before you put in synthetic;
1. carefully track your gas mileage for a few tanks. You'll want to mark improvements.
2. use crank-case cleaner.

I just recently switched to Castrol Syntec. Engine running slightly cooler and improved from 17 MPG to 19 MPG. Also hit just over 20 MPG a couple tanks ago.

The leak thing is a crock the sythetic will not
leak anymore than it did with reg oil

Amsoil
mobil 1
royal purple
any good name syn is better than conventional oil
change to all syn trans, rears every fluid and
you will get better mileage and perf

I run all amsoil fluids and use there grease with
moly at 114,000 miles the only front end parts
I have replaced on my 95 4x4 was the idler arm
and pitman arm but nether had a grease fitting
from the factory

the syn will get dirty fast the first few runs
because it will be removing deposites the best
thing to do is run a flush we use the amsoil
engine flush run 1/2 hour than change filter
and oil

or use the sea foam runn 250 to 500 miles with 1
can thanbe sure its completly warmed up a good
20 mile ride than change oil and filter it helps
but the first few runs it will get dirty fast
after that you will notic it stays cleaner

I use all amsoil except in my engines I run the
royal purple for the last 2 years now but they
are all good oils

The amsoil universal trans fluid or the redline
are the best fluids for these transmissions we
have found my 95 A500 42RH 114,000 still will
cirp the gears I run the TCI 220500 kit but I
drilled and modded the torque converte circuit
and used the spring and cusion blockers from the
transgo kit one hell of a set up

If you plan on any shift kit you should replace
the TV valve plunger and sleave and the 1-2 acc
valve for the best resaults the plastic 1-2 acc
valve is junk the rings become hard and blow by
causing shoft shifts and or bump shifts this needs
to be changed also the tv a lot of them came with
an alm sleave that wears and causes eradic shift
points

Run The Synthetic you will be very happy but do
all the fluids for best resaults that you can
actually feel and see in your gas mileage

my 95 4x4 with all the bolt ons a little port
work always gets 22 to 25mpg city or high way
if I hammer it hard 19mpg

Castrol Syntec is not a real synthetic.

Syntec is a marketing gimmic name so you think
it is a real synthetic when it is not.

I'm not sure about Syntec but a lot of oils are clearly marked "synthetic blend." These are obviously not pure synthetics. Then again don't most petro based oils have non-petro based additives?

Can you post a link that verifies what you say about Syntec not being synthetic?

Anyway; GOOGLE will give you about a million items on most anything. Including Syntec.
