Subject: motor/tranny won't hold truck

Message:
Hey all, My 98 3.9 5spd has been running pretty well, but when I was launching my boat last weekend, the truck started rolling down the launch by itself.
I played with it some more and if the grade is steep enough, it doesn't matter what gear or direction I'm facing; she seems to be turning over.
My compression is ok, 1 cyl is just under 100psi the rest are over 115.
Some guys are saying engine, some are saying tranny, some say to burn the thing down.
Any input would be great.
thx.

I take it that you didn't have the parking brake set? Years ago at the GA 53 landing, if I hadn't been standing next to the truck, we'd have lost the truck and trailer when it starting rolling back when we were pulling out. Pa-in-law had put it first gear, got out, walked back to hook the boat to the winch and she started rolling. Yeah! It was turning it all over - backwards!

I was able to dive in thru the window and hit the brakes with my hand. Just about the entire bed was under water by the time I got it stopped.

ALWAYS set the emergency brake.

Ya, sorry my e-brake is always on, and I pin it right down when I'm on a grade. I've shortened the cable and adjusted it properly. The brake holds ok going forward but it don't hold jsck in reverse.

ok you shorten your cable to try and make it hold better... thats not the correct way to make sure your rear brakes are set properly for the e-brake and for the regular brakes..... to get a proper adjustment on the rear brakes..... loosen up the e-brake cable, then jack up the rear of the truck and pull off wheels, remove the drum and make sure your brake adjuster is free and not seized up cause of rust.... turn the star wheel a few clicks so that it pushes the brakes outwards more so they get close to the drum.... do till the brake shoes just start to grab on the drum to the point they just cause a slight drag.... put wheels back on and then take the slack out of the e-brake cable and adjust it to the point where the e-brake pedal just travels a little more then half way to the floor... after doing that you'll have a proper adjustment of the rear brakes cause you'll be appling more of the shoe to the drum for maxium holding power of the e-brake..... leaving that adjuster turned in down on the shoes keeps the brakes further away from the drum and that when you apply the e-brake your only pushing the top portion of the shoes against the drum and not getting full contact.... when you adjust the adjuster outwards you getting the brakes closer to the drum and when you apply your e-brake your going to get more of the shoe grabbing the drum and it will hold better....
