Subject: flush power steering pump

im having power steering woes, i believe a gasket disintegrated somewhere near where the hoses that leave the power steering pump connect near the bottom of the truck ( not sure what that area is called??) but for some reason now instead of leaking down and then moaning, the pump is full but the truck acts like it has no fluid. Is there any way to flush the pump down safely without removal? I've already siphoned the fluid out, i just want to flush it out. would running water through it damage it even more?? I really have never dealt with the pump before, any help would be appreciated.

Don't waste you time trying to flush the system... All a flush consist of are two hoses going into the resevoir... One sucks and the other runs new fluid in and since they're both side by side it almost seems pointless... AND besides you stated or rather inferred that you have a leak somewhere in the system??? Which to me means that you've added stop leak... Stop leak is designed to find leaks, however how can a leak detection agent tell the difference in a small orifice in the rack or pump versus an actual hose leak??? If your using stop leak then it may have plugged up the orifices in either the rack or the pump "hopefully just the pump"... You may also have a stuck or clogged valve in the pump because of this... You can remove the "pressure" hose from the back side of the pump then remove the valve assemble "big nut on the backside of the pump that the pressure hose screwed into", you'll more than likely find this full of trash... There should also be two other nut plugs on the back of the pump "for a power steering cooler if you've got one" if you don't have the cooler remove these and see if there is any trash in there as well... It's better to do all of this with the pump removed... You will also have a return line "the line that is just clamped on", but you don't or rather shouldn't have to worry about this with the problem you've got... You can try cleaning out the pump first before replacing the entire system if you wish to do so, but if you've been using stop leak and the "pump cleaning" seems to fix the problem, then keep in mind that this stuff has been flowing through the entire system, so it may or may not continue to hold up... ALSO keep in mind that the pump shaft may be broken causing the pump not to pump at all... You can take the resevoir cap off and look for "oil swirl" while the engine is running with the pump full of fluid to see if the pump is actually working...

If all of these check out ok then as you stated the pressure line can be clogged not allowing oil to flow to the rack or the rotory valve in the rack itself can either be bad or clogged...

Oh and there shouldn't be any seals inside the pressure line or pump that could cause the clogging from deterioration and also since you've got a leak somewhere the leak itself should really be fixed by replacing the part in which the leak is found and not by using a sealant or stop leak product...

the stop leak is designed to swell seals and rubber hoses by making them seal off any leaks.... they wont seal off any ports or valve in the steering system.... you can tell if you have pressure going through the perssure line by just grabbing the line and have someone turning the wheel left and right and you'll feel the hose swell alittle.... but you'll wanna feelthe lenght of the hose to determine if there is any blockages in the hose to see if the pressure feeling disappears.... most likely your pressure hose is the source of you leak cause you mentioned you had power steering fluid loss.... if you feel pressure going through the hose them your issue is the rack and it needs replacing.... if you dont feel pressure going thourgh the hose then your pump is most likey bad.... one easy way to see if you have fluid flowing through the system is pull off the return hose and plug off the return line fitting on the pump and just hold the hose into a empty 1qt container and have someone start it and you should see fluid.... if not then re connect that hose and then pull off the pressure hose from the rack and then do the same thing but within performing both checks only let it run for a few seconds cause it can empty the pump quickly...
