How Do I get the damn clutch fan off??oh, and does anyone know anything about a low rpm ticking that fluxuates with the rpms? Ive heard a couple 3.9's with this ticking and im sick of people telling me i need a damn oil change

the clutch requires a tool to use inorder to remove it.... its a big wrench that attaches to an air hammer to break the fan loose from the water pump.... and your ticking noise can be etheir lifters getting weak and bleeding down or the timing chain tensioner is wearing out.....

What I did was put a bolt through one of the holes in the pulley and jammed it against the block/water pump, then I got a 12 inch pipe wrench with a short "cheater bar" attached it to the fan nut/hub and smacked it with a wooden mallet. Came right off with no problems. You could probably do the same thing with a wrench, but I didn't have the right size to do it (> 1.5")

If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

i tried the bolt deal, clutch fan removal kit, and pretty much anything else i could do. finally said screw it and took a sawsall to it. a wasted afternoon that could have been done in 5 min if i just cut the damned thing off in the first place. all i gotta do now is wait for my buddy to get a new disk for his grinder to make it look pretty lol.

depends on where the ticking is coming from. can you hear it in the cab or only with the hood up and standing next to the truck??? at the very least, you got really loud injectors. and at the worst you got mechanical damage to your valve train and pistons

I bought a big, slightly too short, Crescent wrench at Sears. The 2X4 bashing loosens it nicely. When you reinstall, liberally spray WD40 and finger tighten.

A fan removal kit I borrowed from O'Reilly's (parts store) saved me a lot of heartache. One of the tools grips the water pump pulley while you break the fan shaft loose with the other. This is one of those cases where the proper tools make a big difference.

OK, call me "Chicken"! I'm afraid to remove my clutch fan without knowing that the stock electric fan will move enough air at idle to keep the thing cool. I read in other posts that the Black Magic moves 2950CFM. Anybody know what the spec is for air movement on the stock electric fan on a '02 V6?

The Black Magic fan will cool a V6 just fine.
The only time mine runs is at idle, such as at a stop light. Oh, and it runs when the A/C is on.
The engine bay is much quieter without the cluth fan.

been running with just the stock fan for a week now and it does a pretty good job.

think the only places where you would actually need an aftermarket fan is if you live around the gulf or in the southwest. especially in locations that are prone to becoming multi-lane parking lots.

must have a messed up relay or something becuz the fan wont turn on by itself at any certian temp. at risk of overheating and warping the heads i tested a theroy.

with the hvac controls turned off, i let it idle for 1/2 hour, fan didnt turn on once. next test was to run at 2000 rpm. did that for 10 min and same result.

hvac on the vent setting, fan started immediatly and stayed on through out the whole testing.

ac max setting fan in cab on high, doors open to keep the compressor engaged at idle. same results as with vent.

my conclusion is, if the hvac is in any postition, except off, the fan will operate while the truck is running. during the tests, truck remained stationary, no external fan used to aid in cooling and the temp never rose past 210* on a nice 75-80* day.

alright, made an error. the time piece i used was totally messed up. damn pos timer. was wondering why it didnt seem as long enough.

at any rate, i redid the whole test with a good timer.

the only difference there was is with the hvac off, the fan does turn on once the temp reaches 210 and stays on until it drops below around 195.

Remember, chaps, you don't have to remove the stock fan to install an electric fan.
The only time you would need extra cooling, assuming a healthy system, is at or near idle, or maximum power, for any length of time.

Think you missed the intent. Some of us have trucks that came with both the stock fan (and thus the clutch) as well as an electric. I don't recall what year yours is, but mine is an '02 and it has both. The intent with mine is to get rid of the stock fan and rely on the electric. I'm told there's 8-10 HP wasted on the stock fan.

BUT - nobody has answered my question about how much air the stock electric fan will move. ??

Jeggs, J.C.Whitney, Summitt and parts houses, all have sections with a selection of fans and installation configurations.
Whatever they say the CFM is is what it'll do, in park. That is why you have one for your air conditioning.
My wife's Prelude fans start and run, to cool after you turn it off. Part, I think, because there isn't room for a larger overflow tank, and because things are so tightly packed under the hood they need extra cooling.
I looked for an electric fan to mount in the back of my existing shroud, but none was quite large enough, and, it would have cost the better part of $200.00 to do it. That represents a whole lot of gas, assuming a 1 MPG improvement with an electric fan.
I question the thinking that a stock clutch fan causes drag, thus mileage and power loss. Most of the time it idles and the time it causes drag is when it is engaged, you can hear it and feel it then. If you burn up amperage running a fan, doesn't the alternator create drag recharging?
Before clutch fans, I think the theory was valid. No more.

Me and a buddy of mine recently rebuilt a 318 and asked around for the minimum CFM needed to cool it. 1800 CFM min. He didn't have enough room to put an electric fan in (3/4 inch) so use a 17 inch flex fan without the clutch. He has had zero problem with heat in his truck what-so-ever. (89 dakota sport convertable...only engine available for it was the 3.9)

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks....well, it needed to be replaced anyway!!

Oh, and by the way, why spend the $200 on a brand new fan, when you can go to a salvage yard and pick one up for about $15?

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks....well, it needed to be replaced anyway!!

As long as the temp is below 80 degrees, and there is no heavy traffic, I can run with no fan at all. The needle stays pegged at the same temp. I'm going to install a small electric fan to take care of the heavy traffic problem and occassional temps above 80.
