Subject: Misfire and RPMs go up
IP: Logged

Message:
I posted before (Popping Noise?!)I have a 2001 dakota 2wd 3.9V6 Reg. Cab. After i pull out of my driveway and get going up to around 20-30 mph the truck misfires then i stop at the intersection and get going onto the road and the truck misfires bad as i try to get up to 50. But most of the time when i do that it takes forever and i notice the mph goes up very slow and the RPMs go up to say 3000. So the rpms go up fast but the speed does not. The dealer says its sticky valves.

Could be a couple of things. The majors could be slipped timing (timing chain slipped a tooth or 3), worn cam lobes, sticky/uneven valves. I am sure someone else will chime in to help further. I had this problem once on my wife's old camry, and it was misadjusted lifter shims after I rebuilt it.

If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Did it only do it like the first minute of driving or the first time you pick up speed. It does not do it when it is idling but it kind of has a rough idle.

have you tired giving it a tune up? plugs, wires, cap & rotor would probably do wonders for it.

Yes, the dealer replaced all of that. The only thing they say now is that they think it is sticky valves in cylinder 1 and 5. However, when we got home we did the code thing our selves and it said valves 1 and 3 misfired. Any help?

try swapping a couple of fuel injectors around and see if the miss follows the injector. also it is not impossible to have new plugs or wires be bad. you could also check the gap on those plugs.

Is there an easy way to see if it IS the valves sticking or bent. Is there any way for me to look under the hood or do something myself to try and narrow down the possibilities. I dont want to buy something and it not be the solution.

compression check would be the easiest way. i doubt it is a bent valve.

The dealer did a compression check and they said cylinders 1 and 5 were sticking. but when we did the code thing at home it said that cylinders 1 and 3 were the ones that misfired.

Also, the cap and rotor were replaced

if it doesn't do it all the time i can't see how it would be "sticky valves". to see for yourself you could pull the valve covers and start it up. only bad thing about that is it's going to sling oil everywhere. if a valve was sticking i would think that you'd hear a ticking like a bad lifter would make.

how many miles on your truck?

pick up a bottle of Seafoam at your local auto parts store and follow the directions on the bottle. i seem think you have a fuel problem.

Could you explain a little bit what it might be. I did put Heet in the other day and a while ago i put ValveMedic in the crankcase.

I put 1/3 pint in crankcase, 1/3 in gas tank, and 1/3 in the manifold or whatever it is. Ill see what the seafoam does tomorrow when its all cooled down.

Whatever you put into your fuel system, you can't expect an overnight cure. you need to at least run through the fuel in your tank since you put the additive in. you should notice a smoother running engine as the Seafoam starts to work.

How do you do the codes with the ignition? And would the code say what happedened the last time the check engine light came on or the last misfire.
