How many miles on the engine. Worn bearings, oil pump, stuck open relief valve in pump, Fram filter or another brand made by fram non function valve(common on fram), plugged pump screan, oil sending unit defective and probable a few not comming to mind. Check the oil pressure with a mechanical guage first to be certain something actually is wrong.

So many problems .... So little time

Yep, what he said. The pressure sending unit is right behind the distributor slightly to the passenger side. Disconnect this and connect the line from a mechanical unit (about 15-25 bucks at an auto parts store). Your idle pressure should be NO LOWER THAN 13-15 psi at idle. If it is not, like OBIO3 said, suspect the oil filter, oil pump, or more likely the pick up screen on the oil pump. Useful note...in order to check the pick up screen (sludge/deposits build up there) you have to lift the engine about 6 or so inches to get the oil pan off.

If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

ya I get this random drop in oil pressure sometimes, and even a horrible clacking noise from ticking valves because no oil. I found some stuff about sludge buildups and engine design flaws and how Chrysler admits theres a problem but wont to a recall.

Anyways it happened yesterday and I went to the shop and they say I need a new engine. Im hoping if I just get the oil pump replaced it will help, but Im guessing I just got #$%@$% over. Sorry if anybody else has this, or if theres a fix, holla

cuzindoug, the FSM says minimum 6psi @ idle, warm and 30-80 psi @ 3k rpm.

Yeah daddio I read that too, but I like to err on the side of caution. Comes from rebuilding 302's and 350's with my dad back in the day:) I always double what the engineers say is satisfactory @ idle.

My truck has 164,000 on it ('95)and it drops to zero after driving when I stop and it's in gear. It's an automatic. If I slip it into neutral it comes back up. I'm tryiing the AutoRx sludge removal but so far it hasn't improved. I wouldn't think it's a bad signal from the oil sending unit so it must be sludge or a plugged pump screen. What do you think?

Try a mechanical gauge, and hook it up to where the pressure sensor get's it's signal. If it is still low, it is probably the pick up screen that needs cleaned. When the truck is in gear, it idles at a lower speed than when in neutral or park, so the oil pump will pump less oil, especially at higher engine temps, if you have a sludged up screen, it lessens the flow even more.

Is the only way to clean the screen by raising the engine? It's 4x4. Seems like a big job just to drop the oil pan.

If the guage is good, you can spend the money and have an engine flush done. Pump warm cleaning solution at high psi (42) in at oil filter port and vacuum out the pan. This should clean the pick up screen and will clean out sludge. If there's alot , can affect gas milage and this will restore it.

pepboys (here in atlanta anyway) offer this for around $80 with proline oil change (pepboys brand oil). upgrading oil is an additional cost. Pepboys I get this done at uses bilstein machine. do a google search for engine flush and you'll see more information on it.

just got the oil pump and pickup tube changed. oil pressure stays at 40psi during idle. about 70psi at 3500rpm.i like it. i didn't even put a high flow pump on either, i didn't wanna risk any seals leaking. but i'd say its not needed.

derek, what made you decide to get the new oil pump. Was the oil pressure low with a mechanical gauge? I'm still looking for options other than dropping the oil pan.

I opted to drop the pan in mine, check the screen....spotless....change the pump.....not the problem....change the sending unit....BINGO coulda saved about 2 days of screwing around (in my case) take a lesson from me---try the sending unit (10 minutes, and little $) 1st!

Any special tool needed to get the oil pressure sending unit off. I can't seem to get it off. Used a rachet wrench on the rubber part and it just turns and can't get enough room to put a wrench on the lower part.

i just went ahead and got the pump and screen changed. i'd try this engine flush first. i didn't even think about that...probably would've worked. i dunno. i didn't even get to see my old pump or screen. so i don't know what the problem was. but tring to swap that pump my self was hell. wouldn't recomend doing it yourself.

My loss of oil pressure while in gear but stopped turned out to be the oil pressure sending unit. Once changed I didn't have the problem.
