I just replaced front pads and rotors. Damn things are squealing like a $5 whore at mardi gras...any tips (about the brakes...not mardi gras!)?

Nope...but the rotors were drenched in what seemed to be either cutting fluid or something to keep em from corroding.

that's probably why they're squealing. i am assuming you changed the rotors too?

i hope you cleaned them well with brake cleaner. you need to remove that coating when you install them.

I've always cleaned that crap off before I installed them. What you may have are pads that have glazed oil on them. You can try sandpaper to get it off, but that seldom works. Depending how long it continues to squeel is dependant on how far the oil has penetrated the pads.

Sometimes the highprice (lifetime) pads are so hard they tend to cause squeeling. It's basically a really hard object scraping metal. They have aluminum shims you can place between the pad and caliper to minimize the squeeling.

Please repost and let us know what you find.

pending the type of pads you used could be the cause... cheap pads normally squeel the most.. if there was a lifetime brake pad i would like to see them... not a snowballs chance in hell of that happening... ceramic pads are the most common pads now used on most vehicles now cause they cut back on wheel dusting and eliminate brake squeel...

you said something about that oil coating thats on the rotors to keep them form rusting and so on... that needs cleaning off cause if you put a fresh set pads on against those rotors without cleaning them... the pads get inbedded with that liquid and makes them turn hard and a squeel developes...

By 'Lifetime' I'm referring to what some suppliers warrantee them for. Although, many places no longer have 'Lifetime' warrantees. I know the NAPA around here no longer sells them. Of course the pads wear out. But the price you pay is twice that of the cheaper brand. I guess they figure it's likely the customer will sell the vehicle before they go out or they won't have the receipt to prove they were 'Lifetime'.

I respectfully disagree that cheaper pads squeal more. Then again, I work on GM vehicles and they may be a little different than you what oyu work on. In my experience, cheap pads are not as hard as premium pads. The softer material tends to absorb the vibration that causes squealing. They also wear out much quicker. Then again, I suppose each manufacturer is different. And how the brakes are 'burned' makes a difference too. Now adays, most pads are 'ceramic' which does reduce the amount of squealing, for the most part.

The answer to what makes brakes squeal is tricky to answer. There are so many variables involved that diagnoising it online would be no more than a guess. Removing what you can of the oil that was left on the rotors would be my first plan of attack.
