I don't know if you people really know what real transmission slippage is. The truck i was driving was 18 years old and it was an auto. with 200,000 miles on it for it started slipping. I seriously doubt everyone here is telling the truth when it comes to how they drive. Mine has 170,000 miles on it and it drives like new. Everyone here seems to say these units suck, maybe if you didn't race them they wouldn't break, also, whoever says that hitting the overdrive switch off at 70 is a good idea, should not have a license to drive at all.

Maybe your definition of slippage is different from others here. Sometimes people don't choose the exact word to describe it. Many of us I believe are talking about it shifting weird. Sometimes it'll randomly shift when it shouldn't and won't stay in overdrive like it should. It'll keep going in and out of overdrive. Not necessarily slipping, but some may refer to it as that. Also, I do not believe that shifting out of overdrive at 70 mph will harm it that much. I can't say that 100% but like someone else here has said. Turning overdrive off isn't a sudden booster. It'll run the RPMs up a few hundred RPMs, but what do you think happens when you are in a hurry and you floor it to pass someone at 70 mph? It's gonna drop out of overdrive... I know many say when you are trying to max out, you should turn overdrive off. I had my truck up to 105 mph and that's where I hit redline and let off. So shifting out of overdrive at 70 wouldn't suddenly rev the engine up THAT much. The big thing is, you probably shouldn't have your foot on the accelerator or it could cause some major tranny probs. There's my 2 cents supported with some actual details... care to prove me wrong? Include proof and it's all good.

My Transmission went at 74,000. Then again at 90,000. Then they gave me a NEW one and not a rebuild and its the best thing i have had so far. My truck has 115 on it now and besides the timing chain slap and some broken manifold bolts i cant complain. As to the 70 OD thing. I do it to pass with a load. Its fine for me, why should we lose our licence for something you cant handle ?? confused here....

The biggest problem with shifting od off is that it puts a sudden load against the transmission. I have done it before and its not bad at low speeds, but if you are already at say for example 3 thousand rpms, whats going to happen? you will be redlining by dropping od off. od was designed to engage at 45 miles per hour to get more fuel efficency. I should know something about transmissions, seeing as how every auto i have driven has gone well over 200k miles before wearing out.

Hey? you wonder why your transmission went at only 74,000 miles buddy? Shifting od off is very very stupid. I would serioulsy suggest that you go talk to a certified transmission expert an see what he has to say about doing that. When you cut it off, it has to work harder to maintain speed, thereby increasing heat, which can immediatly destroy any transmission.

Step 1: Let off gas
Step 2: Tap overdrive switch
Step 3: Allow it to drop out of overdrive
Step 4: Accelerate without overdrive on

If you follow those steps, your engine won't suddenly redline, although your RPM's will definitely go up some. I've heard you actually go faster with overdrive off, but your RPMs will be higher. I'm sure it's not GOOD for your tranny, but it shouldn't be too harmful either, I wouldn't think.

as a note to the OD off thing, When Cruise is on and i start going up a medium hill at 90Km , My Dak seems to downshift.... then drops outa OD because the RPM goes from 26 to like 36 in seconds...

if i do the same run, but without OD in the beginning, then it can take the hill just fine..

probably not normal, but that is the way mine goes...

The main reason that there is an overdrive is to increase fuel economy. Without it, you would burn a lot more gas as the enginge would have to turn a lot faster to keep speed.

My 98 dakota v6 has started whining when it's in o/d. it stops whining when i turn o/d off or if it has to downshift. its seems to have started immediately after i got new tires (same size as old tires). don't know if that has anything to do with the whining but it seemed like a weird coincidence to me.

Took my 03 Quad Cab back to the dealership yesterday. Took a Service Manager out for a test drive and he couldn't believe how bad my tranny sticks in 2nd gear. It is in under the lemon law so Dodge is sending out an engineer to look at it and take it for a test drive. This is their last chance to fix it or i get a new one or money back. Last time they overhauled the tranny, replaced valve body, solinoids, new case, flash update. Only thing left to do is replace tranny! WHAT FUN!!!!!

I bought a 98 brand new, had to have the transmission entirely replaced at 1500 miles!! Thank goodness it was under warranty. I now have over 174,000 miles on my baby, and she runs like a bandit. I have had no other major problems, I would buy a Dakota again and again. Regular maintenance is worth it's weight in gold.

I bought an '03 Quad Dakota with 15 miles on it. So far Dodge has replaced the valve body, then replaced the whole transmission, then did a computer flash. Maybe I don't know how to drive an automatic but sometimes it does not want to go into 3rd especially on an incline. It will whine up to 3-4000 rpms. Is that normal? I also seem to lose all power when giving it the gas sometimes...starting to sound like a lemon...

Kim.......my 03 quad cab is having the same problems. They have done all the same things to mine as they have done to yours except replace the transmission....which they are probably doing now. Mine also likes to stall out with no warning!!! I am on my last chance with DODGE because of the lemon law. Whatever state you live in start checking into the lemon law and follow it to the exact word......a guy from the New Jersey lemon law office who i am dealing with said the smallest gap in your claim will let Dodge get out of it. Good Luck with it and i will post what happens to mine as soon as i hear about it or get it back.

kim/kevin.. my 01 loses all power when giving it gas, but if i manually shift form 1st up to drive its perfect. i hear changing the governor pressure solenoid and temp sensor will do the trick. Havent tried it yet but soon...

All this crap about overdrive. Third is the strongest gear in the tranny because it is direct (1 to 1). It isn't going to hurt any trans to run with overdrive off, in fact, it is easier on it. Less heat. It will be harder or fuel. Unless you are running at very high speed it won't hurt the engine.
