1.) Did you check the pressure with a mechanical gauge? There is a big operating pressure range. Idle can be under 10 lb. running a bit below 30 on up.

2.) Did you use engine cleaner? Be sure things didn't get gunked up when you weren't looking. What kind and what weight oil do you use? You should be using 30 weight.

3.) I'm returning the 22mm socket I bought to remove the motor mounts. Twisted my extension through 90 degrees and they wouldn't break loose. Impact gun...GOOD!

4.) My mechanic and I jacked up the engine so the transmission mooshed against the floor. Pan wouldnt clear. Removed the starter, then bell housing dust plate. Nope.
We got enough room to stick a socket up and remove the two bolts, then snaked the pump out the driver side. Didn't replace the gasket.

5.) My 98 3.9 had 500,000 miles when we did it. I must wonder what could be wrong with your pump.

I tried all sorts of things to avoid renting a hoist to get the pan out, but they all failed and I had to rent a hoist. I should have done it when the truck was running rather than cram the stuff in the trunk of my 70' Camaro!

Even if you could manage to get the pump out without pulling the pan, I would recommend against it. Pull the pan and CLEAN out the sludge/chunks/shavings that have been collecting. If your belly pan gasket is shot, expect to see LOTS of sludge!

Thanx for your help.Today my Mechanic pulled the motor mount bolts and lifted the engine to its peak.Could not remove the pan after an hour of prying, pulling, pushing and removing god knows what ;to get clearence he decided to slide the pan over enough to remove the two bolts connecting the pump to engine and then poured some solution into the pan to get sludge out via drain plug. could not replace gasket with new used, used some other gasket product.put it back together and now the engine souds and feels like new. thanx again, Alex

wow,
Sounds that way. Isn't that way.
The rubber gasket is glued to the block, and if it is soft and you are careful, it neednt be replaced.
If the pump is put on properly what differance does it make where the pan is?
The lesson we gave is; don't let your truck break.

Alex,
I suggest you run it 3,000 miles (WHAT DID THE AMSOIL GUY SAY???) then change oil and filter to be sure you got all the crud out. Might as well run engine cleaner before the change to be sure.
