alright guys, so I'm plannin on a supercharger as my next move. I know the engine will handle 6lbs of boost just fine but I'm not planning on spending the cash for a supercharger if I can only run 6lbs. I'm wanting to run around 12 to 16 lbs of boost and I know that I'm going to need to install new fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel regulator, and have the computer flashed. But what about internals? Will the stock head gasket hold 16 lbs of boost? What about the bottom end? I'm not afraid to tear the engine down so let me know what you think I would need to change in the bottom end and otherwise to be able to handle a max of 16 lbs of boost.

Thanks in advance,
Tek

im not sure about the head gaskets, but you might want to upgrade your pistons to a good set of forged pistons and new rings. you could also upgrade your rods while you are at it. i believe that you can use a set out of a 5.2/5.9 v8 and they are stronger than the v6 rods.

You need new rings definitely. 16lbs of boost is a little excessive, I wouldn't even attempt it unless I had another engine to put in the truck.

stock block will hold up to 8lbs of boost.... in order to run high boost you need to lower the compression of the motor to for it to be able to hold the higher boost... meaning differnt pistons and a different headgasket thickness....

i need to look into this too because i plan on getting a supercharger too.

im currently rebuilding a 3.9 and i kept the same rods which was probably a mistake but there forged arent they? and i got them shotpeined
anyway i got speedpro forged pistons with molley piston rings
id also like to increase the boost because i think 6-8 is alittle low, id like to bump it up to 10-12

any thoughts?

well if ya plan on runnin 10-12 psi on boost... just take that motor and send it to a machine shop and have it built... cause for one it will be built with all the correct parts and if somethin happens when ya drop that motor in and thers a problem... its over their head not yours... 10-12 psi is some serious boost on a 3.9... have it built by a machine shop that specailizes in that kinda area

There are Supercharger kits out there that run 9 to 12 pounds for the 5.2/5.9 without any mods. I would say lower the compression and upgrade your fuel system, and say goodbye to your transmission. If you want to run 16 pounds say goodbye to the 3.9 too. The only V6 i know of that can run that without rebuilding everything is the Buick 3.8 and 4.1 they used in the Grand National.

8lbs and a boost retard controll if you go above
8 you will need a custom flash to run it

The stock lower end will handle 10 10.5 to 1 with
8lbs we have never went past that and it was a
pain to tune in

Hughes engines has the pistons the heads are 58cc

I just built a 10 to 1 with there 258 266 cam
first ride poped the radiator dam got 1 ordered
brand new $150 not to bad a deal

Rework the engine to handle 20 lbs. of boost. Being a "ricer" or anything else has nothing to do with it. You can run 24 lbs. of boost in a 4 banger Dodge Caravan if it is set up right.

the 4 cylinder engine that are used dodge, mits, honda ans so on are built way differntly then our 3.9.... our 3.9 in the dakotas have like a 4500 rpm range.... these 4 bangers can go 6500 to even 7500 or as high 10 if you were looking a mazda rotory motor made by wankle.... those engines with those kind of rpm ranges have a stronger more durable lower end and have more engine electronics to run them to keep them from blowing up.... but the SRT4, the EVO's, VR4 3000GT all them haveing some sort of forced induction are built for it with having lower compression, different pistons, electronic valve timing/ignition timing.... basicly put.... they are built to handle the boost their forced induction makes...

its not that you need the engine to handle an 8g rpm its the simple fact that you need the compression lower to handle the boost..... if you have to high of compression and you through to much boost to it you can bent rods or shoot one through the oil pan....
