ok, she has finally stoped running on me, she was doing fine, and as I exited the highway, she just would not get any fuel to her....It would start for about 10 seconds, and if I would give it the gas, she qult instantly....I would start it and let it run, It would run real rough, and I could here a real loud sucking sound at the back of the throttle body, in the ICV valve....I would try to give it fuel and It would die real fast....I had it towed to my house, thinking the fuel pump is gone, well It had sat for about 2-3 hours, and I went out to turn the key on just to get the radio, and I heard the pump kick on so I started it and it runs like nothing happened...I am affraid to take it any where..Whet could this be.....I have also posted the start of all this problems in the title Funny Problem....

How many miles? What year? It sounds like the fuel pump dies out when it heats up/runs for a while. Have you gone a fuel pressure check at the fuel rail?

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

1996 2wd, dak....123,500...I just checked the pump, pep boys gave me the wrong one, I took the filter off and cleaned it..It was dark, almost black, I can now see through it, and it is pumping a good stream. I hope it will last me til I can buy a new pump. Everywhere I checked they have to order it, now I know why pep boys had one in stock, its the wrong one....

well I have had it running for over 1hour and nothing....I took it for a little spin, no stalling, but I was on a back road, and I got on it a few times...Is it possible that It was getting hot and shutting down the fuel flow, or was it that the filter was so full that it was restricted...should I still replace the fuel pump if it is working fine.

Ok I looked down inside the throttle body....there is some oil, like a lite coting, and some sludge oil in a few spots...Could that be the problem, a blown intake gasket, causing all this trouble...How hard is it to change, how much will it cost me, how many things have to come off.......What is my best option for this....

Has the pump ever been replaced? One of the problems was probably the dirt filter sock, and it restricted the fuel enough to overheat the pump(like you said). I am geussing if it has never been replaced that it will probably go sometime in the near future. I would get a pressure gauge, hook it up to the schrader valve on the rail (run it so you can see it in the cab) and run the truck around a little bit, getting into it every so often. The pressure should run around 40-50 psi.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

thanks for all your help. I hope I can make it for a about 2 weeks til payday. I had it towed and it sat for 2 hours. I went out just to turn it on to hear if for sure if it pump was kicking on, It did and it fired right up. I took all it apart, and cleaned the filter sock, I wash it with soap and water, and cleaned it with a tooth brush, let it dry, then sprayed it with 2 cans of throttle body cleaner, and brake cleaner, I could see daylight through it, Put it back on the pump. filled a bucket up with gas, sat it in there turned the key and it pumped gas out in a good stream.......

Wierd! Or maybe I'm wierd. In 500,000 miles I replaced one fuel pump, a monsterous plastic cannister thing, and it wasn't dirty.
I always use Costco gas, it's cheaper, and have no fuel problems.
I also add Amsoil PI to the gas to be sure things are clean.
I suggest you come out here to gas up. No, seriously, go somewhere else for your petrol. And use a gas cleaner a couple times a year.

Well I have had it on a fuel pressure gage all day, and I have been running it hard at times and regular speed. It is staying between 46-47 PSI. I can not get it to Stall out snice I cleaned the fuel filter sock. My mech told me it could have been so pluged that at times it was sucking the sock up agianst the inlet and cutting off the fuel. and it is what was causing the shut down at speeds over 70 mph for 30+ minutes. It is now running good, still has miss at idle. I am so confused, II have no idea what is causing all this

Good, sounds like you fixed one problem. One question, have you run the truck at night with the hood open, and looked for sparking? There was a TSB about the routing of the wires for the daks. Try the night engine run (or in a dark place like a garage), and look for sparking around the wires, looms, and valve covers. Also, make sure the plugs are gapped properly, and that your injector timing(distibutor, #1 TDC aligning with the hash mark on the dist/HE coil body) is set in the right area (I screwed around with the distributor and fudged my injector timing all up!!)

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

on my 98 3.9 set the timing thus;
Crank to TDC
Rotor should point to #1 sparkplug wire. The #1 on the cap.
Directly under the rotor tip is a notch in the side of the metal housing.
They align, timing is set.

I apologise. I was going to make a snide comment about comprehension, then read what I wrote. Again, sorry. The original pump pooped out somewhat past 300,000 miles.

You have fixed the problem for a considerable time, or number of miles...
I replaced the assembly in my 95 - thinking pump had gone , But actual problem was as you saw- the
Filters plugged up..
For our trucks the assembly has just like an air
filter at the bottom {outside) of assembly..
However there is also a simpler [ screen] filter
inside - below the actual pump - which would filter the gas which is allowed to get into the assembly from above the half full mark..
See this for detail - basically identical

Hey thanks for the inlo, My pump is funny looking. The one I bought was like the one in the web page. But the one in my truck is diffrent. Its a walbaro it has a small screen filter, kind like a change purse size. I wonder how long until i have to replace the entire pump. I wish we could just change the filters. I cleaned it so much, I washed it out with soap and water, and a tooth bruch, sprayed 2 cans of brake cleaner, and sprayed 2 cans of TB cleaner on it and washed it out in gas.....Let it dry, put it back on the bottom of the pump, sat it in a bucket full of gas, hook it up and kept turning the key and pumped gas through it....I hope its clean. A mech that has been helping me said it could have been so clogged that it would suck for gas so hard that it sucked the filter up in the opening and bled it off.

Now that you spent all that money, why not invest in a bottle of Amsoil PI (Steve will be delighted to help you there) or, if you can't stand me, use something else. It does work.

Maybe where you are it aint so , but in Caleefornia (little Arnold, there) gas stations must change filters and pass tests periodicly. I've driven 500,000 miles, using Costco gas, and never had a problem. Moral of this story; go where they sell a lot of gas.
