Didn't see this appear the first time. Sorry if it's a re-post.

I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab, V6 engine, with 81,000 miles, never had an engine light/code appear. I've recently had intermittent problems with engine stalling while 1)driving (dangerous!!), 2)putting into gear, and 3) at stoplights.

I've also had problems with the truck sputtering or "missing" while driving, usually at 65 mph; the truck jolts forward, so I deccelerate, only to have it "miss" again when I reach a high speed. The spedometer doesn't seem to reflect my actual speed, because it feels like I'm going slower; the truck moves sluggishly. This happens after driving for about 25 minutes. This also is an intermittent issue.

I did a fuel system cleaner and used premium gas, but I continued having problems.

Finally took the truck to a dealership a few weeks ago. They cleaned the throttle body and replaced the oil pan gasket. They also did a tune-up.

Truck ran fine for almost a week before I experienced the same stalling problem. Took it back to the dealership last week. They were able to duplicate the stall, and this time said it was the crank sensor, which they replaced.

This week, the truck hasn't stalled. But while idling, the engine sounds like it's ABOUT to stall. My engine does not feel/sound right to me; I think it runs rougher and louder, with a more "rolling" sound, as if it's on the brink of stalling. Also, it is still "missing," all under the same circumstances as noted above.

Basically, I'm out of ideas (and money!) as to what could be wrong. I've put $1,000 into my truck in one month, which is irritating since it's only four years old and the problem still isn't fixed. I am not confident in the truck's performance; I am afraid to drive it! Any suggestions as to what could be wrong, or what I could do, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Brittany

Just a thought- have you ever had the fuel filter replaced? If it gets clogged it will not let sufficient fuel to flow resulting in stalling.

Had very similar characteristics going on. Replaced fuel filter like Jerry recommends. It was fixed instantly. Wow!
Other possiblities:
-fuel injector; fuel system(fuel pump)
-ignition problems:cap & rotor check up, ...
-IAC:Idle Air Control valve could be cleaned or replaced.

Also, check all over the internet for 'engine stalling.' There are other forums out there specifically for DIY and mechanics. Otherwise mention progress and people will help.

What on earth does a pan gasket got to do with the symptoms? Find out. Don't let them pull a "Sears" on you. Your ultimate recourse is; www.trouble shooter tom.com. He takes names and kicks butt.
Just for fun; remove and clean the battery terminals and connectors. Then have the battery load tested. Everything runs on electricity, and it could be you just don't have enough.

I spoke too soon...

experienced "missing" symptoms at 40 mph this morning. Truck finally stalled-- thankfully, as I pulled into a gas station! After about 10 starts-stalls, I got it to start and STAY ON, so I took it back to the dealership for the third time in 3 weeks. This time, *I* drove the truck with a shop manager, with the diagnostic computer hooked up. Of course, the truck drove fine. Of course. I mentioned if it could be fuel pump/system, and the manager said that if it were, the symptoms would be more frequent. So who knows? A mechanic is going to drive it home AGAIN, this time with a reader on the fuel pump. Fortunately, now I've been given a rental car for the time being.

Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions. Oh, the oil pan gasket was blown, which is why it was replaced. I haven't decided if I should push my truck over a cliff, or if I should drive it over with me in it...

Good luck and let us know. It not always easy figuring it out over the net. Dealer is probably right on the fuel pump. But you never know.

See I am having the similar problem, but mine is 75 mph, for about 25 min, and it stalls out, like the gas shuts off, and throws a code P301, P302 mupitle cylinder misfire cyl 1 and cyl 2... Could it be the Fuel pump.......

Here is what I posted before, maybe you have similar problems, I have replaced the water pump, fan clutch, TPS, Crankshaft sensor, 2 cans of seafoam....

I have a slight miss at Idle, motor kinda shakes slightly, I have had it to a mechanic, he said that I had 11 degrees of slop in my timming chain, replace the plugs, coil, cap, rotor, crankshaft sensor, 2 cans of seafoam in the tank, he said it showed no tell tell signs of a intake leak. still could be one, but not using coolent or oil. as I drive for about 30 miles or more, at 70-75 MPH, it would lose all power, like I was out of gas, motor still running, I would pull over shut it off and it would cool down, and run normal.....long story short, it is still doing it and after it does it it will throw the same code P300,P301,P302. random mupitale miss fire, missfire cyl 1 and cyl 2. Sometimes it will give a lean code.....I just replaced the TPS. what else am i overlooking.....

My truck had a stall and idle problem with no codes. changed the idle control sensor and fixed it. Other time I had a tell-tale idle and stall problem and changed the fuel filter. Fixed it right up. Guess the IAC is the only thing you haven't tried.
