I have a '87 4WD dakota 3.9 with 5-speed. I am thinkin about changing it to a automatic, can someone inform me of the right automatic and other parts I might need? Will I need to do anything to the drive shafts? Thanks for any information.

Okay Lads, a question for the mechanics;
Will the computer need to be re-flashed (re-programmed, for those of you in Rio Linda) to run an automatic? Or will a new computer be required?

KEEP the 5-speed... dont be lazy just shift those gears like a trooper Manual transmissions are better in virtualy every aspect compared to an automatic, if you read the treads you'll notice people barely making 100k miles on an auto whiel others rolling in 500k on original 5 speed with maybe a couple clutch changes (ALOT cheaper in the long run to change clutch vs rebuilding tranny) also manuals get better mpg when in gear with a manual its 1:1 there is no to very very little difference in the engine rpms to transmission rpms, on an automatic sicne the connection is through fluid the engine will acctualy be spinning faster than the transmission side is after the torqe converter... that and for 4x4 you'll wanna beable to control your gears manualy. plus the thrill of a true WOT Powershift in my mind an automatic will never beable to do that necksnaping hard of a shift :p
