Subject: a funny problem

Message:
I have a slight miss at Idle, motor kinda shakes slightly, I have had it to a mechanic, he said that I had 11 degrees of slop in my timming chain, replace the plugs, coil, cap, rotor, crankshaft sensor, 2 cans of seafoam in the tank, he said it showed no tell tell signs of a intake leak. still could be one, but not using coolent or oil. as I drive for about 30 miles or more, at 70-75 MPH, it would lose all power, like I was out of gas, motor still running, I would pull over shut it off and it would cool down, and run normal.....long story short, it is still doing it and after it does it it will throw the same code P300,P301,P302. random mupitale miss fire, missfire cyl 1 and cyl 2. Sometimes it will give a lean code.....I just replaced the TPS. what else am i overlooking.....

Ok, well I just changed the Fan clutch, it was making a horrible sound. I warm it up take it slow for about 30 miles then slowly kick it up to 75.....1min later she starts acting up, feels like the truck is not getting gas, I put my foot to the floor and nothing. I pull over put it in Netural, and my tac is going from 2-3 hundred rpms. I shut it off for 5 min or so, and its back up to 6-8 hundred RPMS. It throws another missfire code, same as always, Nupitle missfires, miss fire cyl 1 and Cyl 2. and a lean code......I noticed the sound that was making with the old fan clutch, it is back and not as bad, but every now and then you hear it...Can any one explain what I need to do next, I have replaced the timeing chain, Plugs, wires, rotor, cap, crankshaft sensor, TPS, fan clutch and coil...what next.

Ok, here we go again......Had to take the fan back off cause the noise it was making was the water pump bearing.....Ok fixed that, my problem is still the miss at idle it will go between 600-800 RPM, the engine has a noticeable shake to it. It was working fine until yesterday, and at 73-75 MPH, It started acting funny agian, It was like I was losing power, like the fuel shut off...Well I pulled it over agian, let it cool and started it back up, and it was fine, threw a code, same ones Mupitle missfires, and missfires cyl 1 and cyl 2, and a lean code. Could the fact that my water pump and fan clutch were going back cause that..I have not tried it at high speeds snice I canged the water pump. Could it have ben the engine getting hot and causing all of this.CAN ANYONE HELP ME, Lrry what do you think.

122,000 miles is not high. Unless poor quality oil was used. Still, I wonder about timing chains wearing out that fast.
Twice I had similar missing problems; first it was caused by leaky valves then by a worn out camshaft, which caused the same symptoms as bad valves. You might do serious diagnosis there.
Ask whomever replaced the timing chain if the intake system was removed and if so, did they think to remove 2 bolts, lift the plate and inspect the cam.

I ran a snap on scanner on my 99 Dak bout two weeks ago, the timing was advanced between 17 deg and 22 deg. What could be happening on yours like it was on mine was the ignitiion pick up coil in the distrib was going bad, at high RPMs the coil would start to get hot from the engine and start dropping signals. I replaced it and it fixed the problem, still my timing is at 17 degrees, but it runs like a raped ape right now, with exception to the tranny issue Im having, anyone know of a good aftermarket tranny that will bolt up thats made better than the factory 44re (A500/A518)?

They run about 25 dollars from advance auto parts (where I work at). The hard part is removing the distibutor and the distributor gear from the motor. You have to make alignment marks on EVERYTHING or you will throw your ignition system way out of syncronization. Its not hard, the haynes manual describes it in detail, and if you talk to a parts pro at advance, they should be able to describe to you the way to do it. Its a little harder than the water pump, do to the area its located in, and you will need a set of offset distributor wrenches, again available at most any parts stores for bout 20$ to do it. If you do it, its not a bad time to change the cap, rotor button, plugs and wires, clean the throttle body with some good TB cleaner.

SeaFoam and other types of fuel cleaners are good for maintenance, but if you have deposits in your fuel injectors, the best thing to do is have them untrasonically cleaned "off car". 2nd best choice is at least and "on car" professional cleaning. Sometimes the fuel inj o-rings are worn and cause a vac leak, causing a lean condition.

What happens with the multiple cylinder misfire is that one cylinder goes lean (clogged fuel injector, vac leak, etc...) and the o2 sensors tell the computer to compinsate by extending the "on" time of all the injectors. This causes other cylinders to run rich.

ok, she has finally stoped running on me, she was doing fine, and as I exited the highway, she just would not get any fuel to her....It would start for about 10 seconds, and if I would give it the gas, she qult instantly....I would start it and let it run, It would run real rough, and I could here a real loud sucking sound at the back of the throttle body, in the ICV valve....I would try to give it fuel and It would die real fast....I had it towed to my house, thinking the fuel pump is gone, well It had sat for about 2-3 hours, and I went out to turn the key on just to get the radio, and I heard the pump kick on so I started it and it runs like nothing happened...I am affraid to take it any where..Whet could this be.....I have also posted the start of all this problems in the title Funny Problem....

well I have had it running for over 1hour and nothing....I took it for a little spin, no stalling, but I was on a back road, and I got on it a few times...Is it possible that It was getting hot and shutting down the fuel flow, or was it that the filter was so full that it was restricted...should I still replace the fuel pump if it is working fine.
