I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Sport. I have 62000km on it. Just lately the Check Engine light has come on. Had it scanned, with the resulting codes P0455-P0442. I've tried a new Mopar gas cap, and 1 day later, light came back on. I know it is an emissions problem, but what else should I look for?

Check all your vacuum lines, looking for a split where they connect. I had the same problem not long ago. Mine was on the driver's side, clearly visible. Saw it immediately after raising the hood - took about 1 minute to fix after obtaining new tubing from NAPA.

Hi TuckerLdlow. Where exactly was your hose that split? I know it could be anywhere, but was just curious?

Raise the hood, look on the driver's side - direct your attention to the Fuse and Relay box. Coming from that area, you have two vacuum hoses. One goes to the Throttle Body, and the other goes to the back of the engine ... somewhere. I say somewhere because it was already dark before I got on, and I really can't tell where it goes until tomorrow in the daylight.

On mine, the one that goes to the back of the engine has an inline fitting with a green cap on it - probably to check vacuum pressure or something. Mine was split at that fitting.

I just bought a new digital camera, so I'll try to get some pics tomorrow afternoon when I get the truck back. It's headed in to the dealer in the morning so they can see if they can figure out why my volt meter will occasionally peg.

that green cap is the EVAP test port... on mopars they have a leak detection pump... what happens the pump fills vacuum lines starting from a certain point with about 1psi of air to the gas tank... then what happens is that it montiors the pressure to see if there is leaks with a changed pressure...if there is a noticeable change in drop of pressure it will kick the check engine light on for the systek to be checked... it just makes sure that the lines from the purge valve at the engine to the tank is good so that it can pull vapors into the engine so they can be burned... then it will pull a vacuum on the fuel system to pull in gasoline fumes to burn them in the engine... basicly its there so the vehicles dont release fuel vapors into the atmosphere...

Sorry, AJC - got sidetracked on other "honey dew" projects this weekend and never got time to play with the camera and post a pic. But perhaps you got the problem resolved?

No problem! I have one of those lists also. It's about the size of a toilet paper roll! LOL. Haven't got it fixed yet, like you, I've had other things to do, and the truck still runs okay. I will look at it again for sure.

See I am having the similar problem, but mine is 75 mph, for about 25 min, and it stalls out, like the gas shuts off, and throws a code P301, P302 mupitle cylinder misfire cyl 1 and cyl 2... Could it be the Fuel pump.......

Here is what I posted before, maybe you have similar problems, I have replaced the water pump, fan clutch, TPS, Crankshaft sensor, 2 cans of seafoam....

I have a slight miss at Idle, motor kinda shakes slightly, I have had it to a mechanic, he said that I had 11 degrees of slop in my timming chain, replace the plugs, coil, cap, rotor, crankshaft sensor, 2 cans of seafoam in the tank, he said it showed no tell tell signs of a intake leak. still could be one, but not using coolent or oil. as I drive for about 30 miles or more, at 70-75 MPH, it would lose all power, like I was out of gas, motor still running, I would pull over shut it off and it would cool down, and run normal.....long story short, it is still doing it and after it does it it will throw the same code P300,P301,P302. random mupitale miss fire, missfire cyl 1 and cyl 2. Sometimes it will give a lean code.....I just replaced the TPS. what else am i overlooking.....
