Subject: TB Swap - Problem - Help Please

Hey,

I just swapped in a V8 TB and everything went as planned, except for one thing. The throttle cable wont connect to the TB. The TB I bought at a junkyard and its from the same year Dakota ('94). My throttle cable has a little cilinder on the end with the cable running into the side of it. That was connected in a plastic housing on the arm coming off the TB. The new TB has a completely different plastic housing, which would make me thing that the V8 throttle cable is different that the V6. Have any of you all that have done this swap run into this problem, and if so, how did you fix it? Any ideas would be appreciated. I hoping there is just a simple adaptor I can but, but no luck so far on google. Thanks for all your help.

You need to swap in a cable from a V8 or take the TB off and drill and tap a ball/stud onto the existing throttle linkage plate. Holley supplies an assortment of ball studs to do this. If you are uneasy with drilling etc., just get a V8 cable from a junk yard

Your fix is a bit tougher the most. Replacing the cable is the easiest way to go. Swapping the throttle shafts is an option. You can simply lengthen the slot in the v6 shaft and use your existing cable.

I assume that you had a type 2 linkage

Thanks for the suggestions. You're right, I originally had the type 2. The new V8 TB has the type 3. I just have a couple of questions.

If I were to replace the the cable, what all do I have to do? I haven't done it before, so if you've got a few details on what it entails, that would be very helpful.

What do you mean by lengthening the slot in the v6 shaft? Can I remove the shaft and put it on the V8?

I just need a few more details so I can decide what would be the easiest for me to do. Thanks for all your help.

I just did this mod this past weekend. I would highly recommend getting a new cabel. Sound like you will need to order one for a 96-03 Dakota. It pretty simple to change this. You will need to go under the dash were the cabel comes through the firewall. There are ears on each side of the cabel that holds it in the firewall. Refer to your new cabel to see what I am describing. These will need to be squeesed together and pushed out of the firewall. The end on the TB has a little ear that you pry out and lift the cabel from the bracket. You can order the cabel on line and get it for about $36 dollars including shipping. Hope this helps.

Swapping shafts entails disassembling both TBs completely. The shafts are basically the same except the slots in the v8 shaft are longer to accomodate the larger diameter throttle plates.

Unless you have some experience along those line you are probably better off following Kent's suggestion. I've gotten cables from junk yards for as little as five bucks but most people are better off buying new.

yeah, the throttle cable swap was pretty simple to do. the complaining my wife did about pulling on the cable took longer than the whole tb swap LOL.
