Subject: Truck wont start. Help!!

Message:
I recently bought a 1992 Dakota 3.9L V6 2WD for $125. Problem is it will crank but it will not kick over. Previous owner was driving down the highway and the engine just killed on him. He was told by a mechanic that it was either a broken timing chain or a bent cam. I have checked the compression its fine, changed the distributor rotor (old one was bad), changed the pickup coil (old one was bad), and changed the crankshaft sensor (old one was cracked). I have also checked the fuel pressure its fine and i am now getting fire to the injectors. Engine still wont kick over. I have traced the problem from the ignition coil to the PCM. What is happening is the power coming out of the PCM will be fine when the key is switched on but will fade when trying to crank the engine. By the way it is not the ignition coil because i bought a new one from Autozone and I have the same problem and it is not the relay everything is fine. Also my battery is low and in order to crank the engine to check everything I have to jump the battery. My question is does anyone know if this is a PCM problem, a low battery problem, or should I be checking something else? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a combo problem. Low battery will not allow the coil/injectors/PCM to work properly, and I suspect the notorious splice located about 5 or so inches from the fuse/relay box. If it was a bent cam or a broken timing chain you probably would have got good compression, AND you would have heard/felt it. The engine probably wouldn't have even turned over. Also, have you checked the ASD relay? If it is corroded, that could cause a problem too. Good Luck!

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

You have to have air, fuel, spark, and compression to make an engine run.
Which one(s) don't you have?

From checking everything that I have already checked I would have to say that I'm not getting any spark. Could this be a computer problem or something else? Dont know where else to look. Please help anyone. Thanks.

Read the "Will It Break" postings. All the same symptoms..Probally the same problem. Have you checked the Crank Position Sensor?
Good Luck.

It has good compression, so I doubt that it jumped time, still the chain could be wore to the point of the timing its self is way off and cause hard starting. Still zzark made a lot of sence in his post.

look at the splice again its a plastic round barrel with about 10 wires going into it....the pins are either broke or corroded...then check the pickup coil it has the same kind of connector with the same problem ...broke or corroded....you might have to cut out the splices and solder all the wires togeather .....i did and it fixed the problem....make sure you use a test light to see if theres power on one side and not the other....

Easy Fix, whats your truck? The wires going in to Power Distribution Center on drivers side by windshield washer reservior on the 1992 3.9 Turbo has about 20 - 40 wires and about 6 to 8 inches or so from the box after you remove wire wrap, tape there will be two splices, one had dark blue wires and the other dark green three wires in each splice and (a single plug on a short black lead that goes to nothing) on mine is in one of the splices. Both of these splices need to be cleaned and resoldered. This might fix yours Bruce as it needs to be done, but as Trev1 says, (he also has a 92), Follow all the stuff on all the Toby WD40 posts and you will find the problem probably, if not follow on SteveDak and TobyWD40 are still lookin, HA! Good Luck, TobyWD40 "WD40 Pisses wasps off"

Hey Bruce, I failed to mention that the Power Dist. Box replaced the things called fusible links. I was through about 85% of the insulation on all my wiring before I found this out. One of my buddies on here told me to check the fusible links and I proceeded to remove all the stuff covering all the wires looking for fusible links and when I read my dealers manual I found out that the 92 doesn't have them, Ha!. The insulation was bad anyway and it needed to be done so it wasn't a mistake just a slight difference from one year to the next. Half the fun is in the figuring and this web site and all the guys on it. I need my truck as I'm sure you need yours, but I want it right, ya know what I mean. Almost all the guys on here have 100,000+ miles and really everyhing I've changed so far was needed. I promise if you read you will figure it out. All the posts on the V6 forum are good and informative. They are going to throw me off for talking too much, HA! Have fun and keep us all posted, I promise many eyes watch everything that goes on here. Toby "Polish your shoes with WD40 just not the bottom"

WD, did you see a splice of red or red/white wires in there? 3 wires spliced to 1. i believe it's called splice #115. if so, did you re-splice it also? just trying to cover all the bases.

Hey Daddio, On the 92 there are red/wht wires, but no splice I find, They are important though. They originate in a plug behind the Battery, actually in the computer, (Pin3), then to plug behind battery. From there they go to the B side of ASD relay and B side of the Fuel pump relay and to a fuse in the Power Dist. Box and ultimately to the fuel pump. They are carrying 12 volts I Think. I think they spliced a different color on every single truck just to keep us on our toes, Ha! I think this is the first vehicle that had a hand made splice on it that I didn't put there, usually they use plugs and most connections on these are plugs. I wonder why they did it? Keep us posted Bruce you might solve the mystery sickness in the 92's, Ha! Toby

yeah, dak49 is right. you are a quick study wd. does that manual mention the splice #115? just wondering because it's been a fix for quite a few with problems similar to yours. it should be about 6-8 inches below the PDC(power distribution center) on the driverside inner fender.

Ok Pricks, I'm not too smart yall got me again, HA! Daddio, Curly, I didn't know you had to remove the fuse box, and Daddio there looks to be a splice of Red/wht wires somewhere, by the diagram. 1 rd/wt from ASD relay - 1 rd/wt from fuel pump relay - and somewhere they splice and
1 rd/wt goes to fuse d in the power Dist. Box., I had the box off and never saw that splice, that means if I find it I had 3 wire splices around the PDC. It looks like You could start at Pin 3 on the 60 pin conn. and go to plug behind battery for test 1 continuity. Then from the plug to fuse d and test both sides and one side or the other should give continuity. Then to the ASD and Fuel pump relay B prong or if you checked all 4 prongs on each relay at least one should give continuity to the plug behind battery rd/wt wire. I am fixing to do this since I failed to notice this splice. Also check from pin 3 ,(60 pin), to ground, because it might be live since it goes to battery. If so all the checks listed will be voltage checks instead of continuity. Thanks Guy's ya came thru again, Toby PS. from the fuel pump relay the rd/wt wire turns to dg/blk as it goes to fuel pump.
