I have a 97 Dakota 3.9 4x4 Automatic (42re) and I replaced the transmission with a 2000 model. The trans shifts great through all gears while its cold. After it warms up the O/D light comes on and so does the TRANS TEMP light, then I only get 3 gears, 1-2-3...no 4. I checked with the salvage yard where I purchased the 2000 tranny and they say that the 2000 tranny brought a chassis computer? where as the 1997 does not! If anyone out there knows what I could do to get this trans shifting properly, please let me know.

im not sure on the interchange from what model year to model year.... but sounds like you got the wrong tranny... in 2000 they might have did some electronics changes....

I'm having tranny problems too. Not the same as you though.

My thought is there is something other than a computer problem. I don't think the changes in the year make a difference if you have OD to start and it goes away after it warms up. I'm thinking more along the lines of a solonoid, speed sensor, temp sensor, or wrong tranny fluid. You do know to use ATF and not Dextron, right? I'm sure you do.

That's just my two cents.... I'm heading back at my speed sensor problem... Hope all works out. Let us know what you've found. It's nice to help people, but knowing what the ultimate fix was helps those who help others. Please post!!!

Thanks!

Mike

99 and up same trans

sounds like the temp sensor its incorpirated into
the presure sensor 3 wire plug inside trans a
comon o/d shift problem with the RE trans

The RE trans I see so many with bad sensor and sol
its not even funny anymore and they will do the
strangest things when they go bad

no O/D
no 3rd
soft 1-2 2-3 shift
hang up in lock up
bang reverse and first shifting in

You name it

The first thing we do with RE complaints is change
the sensor and sol new fluid and filter and 99%
of the time it solves all the problems

hey expo2nv, did you ever get a response to your problem that actually solved your problem? because that is the same exact problem I am having with my transmission. I have a 97 Dakota 3.9l and I put a 2001 trans in and now the o/d shifts out and the trans temp light comes on.
