Subject: Dynomax 17748 Sound
IP: Logged

Message:
I know these topics come up alot, but I've spent hours searching and can't come up with a sound clip.

Does anyone have a sound clip from a 3.9 with a Dynomax 17748?

I think im gonna pull my computer microphone out and record the true sound coming out of the truck. If anyone wants to know the sound a Dynomax 17748 makes with a 3.9L V6, post up to make me create the sound clips faster.

The dynomax will not sound like a ricer I have
installed many on customers trucks with the 2.5
tail and all were very happy with the sound and
the added low end torque

The 11748 and the factory 2.5 tail always shows
the best hp and torque on dyno runs and seams to
be the perfict set up for the V6 stock or with
all the bolton's most show 5hp gains with this
setup not bad for just an exhaust system

Unlike most of these cat back systems claiming
10 to 25 hp and most actualy show a low end loss
the dynomax setup is a true 5hp and 10 foot pounds
of torque at the wheels no false claims of big
horsepower that does not exsist

I took my 17748 to the local shop and they said it wouldn't fit. I then put in a 17733. I think they were too lazy to adjust the stock hangers to use the stock tailpipe. Also the 17748 is a little longer so it didn't exactly fit between the hangers.

Larry - how do you adjust the hangers and do you use the stock tailpipe.

The tail pipe has the hangers welded right on it
just hang it put the muff on and support it with
a jack stand or some wood blocks so it and the
tail pipe are level and in the right posision
than all you need to do is figure out the pipe
from the muff to the exhaust pipe

Than all we do is add a strap hanger to the front
of the muff to the body, frame thats it they fit
very well most have a bolt right there you can
take out for the strap hanger

Yes I would say those guys were either lazy or
did not have the know how to do it.

installed the 17748 today after work.... installed easy... had to trim about 3 inches of the front pipe befor the muffler so they tailpipe would lineup.... put a aftermarket hanger in 3inches up the pipe where a bolt is to a heatsheild that attechs to the body.... took the 7/16 bolt out and replaced it with a bigger sheet metal bolt for the extra weight and also due to vibration... took about 1.5 hours cause i was working on an alighment rack with next to no room... but the sound out the tailpipe is alittle bit more noticeable then stock but then agian ive been driving on a muffler thats been leaking at the seems for awhile... so i guess the sound could alot more noticeable if it was more quiet to begin with.... sounds good under acceleration but once it warms up it sounds better.... but for my taste it could be louder like my mustang cause that what im use to... but the wife says no the truck is loud enough(anybody else got one of those yelling that),to me any vehicle aint loud enough.. LOL louder the better..... but over all it sounds good and very tolerable while driving at highway speeds...

I have a question about instillation. If the pipes on my truck are already 2.5, and the inlet/outlet on the muffler is 2.5, how do you get it to fit together? Also, I think I might be missing about 5 or 6 inches of intermediate pipe because i installed a 28" glasspack a while back. there's no way im keeping that thing on, and i plan on installing the 17748 as soon as possible. so as soon as i figure out weather or not it'll fit without major modification im gonna put it on. thanks for your help.

well first of all is your truck and ext. cab short bed, reg cab long bed or reg. cab short bed.... if its the first 2 choice the intermediate pipe is replaceable off the cat... now the stock muffler is shorter then 17748 by like 3 inches give or take.... in my previous post i explained the install process i went through and my truck is 99 ext.cab short bed 2wd

install.... cut back 3 inchs off the intermediate pipe... the 17748 has a inside diameter of 2.5 so it will slide over the other pipe as well slide over the tailpipe... the tailpipe will use the stock hanger locations.... the front hanger befor the muffler will be discarded.... you'll see a heat sheild about 3-4 inches back with a single 7/16 bolt right above the intermediate pipe... remove that bolt and use a univeral hanger to replace factory hanger... attach the hanger to where that bolt is by bending the strape 90degrees and attach with a larger sheet metal bolt for strength... use 3 2.5 clamps(2 for muffler and 1 for the hanger)

ok ive finally got this all resolved. For the sake of simplicity I ordered the dynomax 3" super turbo catback. I know that everybody says 3" is too much but I figure that its after the cat (which is the most restrictive part) anyway so it wont matter. plus i need all new piping since ive basically destroyed the old piping. has anyone else gotten one of these catbacks? its just a 3" single exit exhaust with the super turbo muffler so im hoping it wont sound ricey.

I have the 2 3/4 dynomax catback system LOUD

I made a 9" baffle and put it in the end of the
tail pipe to cut the sound down and regain the
back pressure and low end I lost from the bigger
system

Thought I would try the system but even the 2 3/4
was to big for the V6 it will be comming off this
summer and back to a 11748 and 2.5 tail I will
trow the 2 3/4 muff and tail on the 88 318
fire wood truck it needs one anyway

I was very unsatisfied with the bigger system from
dynomax

One other thing on the dynomax mufflers they take
1 to 3000 miles to break in than they will be
a little louder

They have glass pack inside

yeah i have noticed that after i have driven awhile now that the tone has got a bit louder and inwhich im starting to like it more... but i did notice one thing that with the muffler, that after only driving on it for 2 days after install and on the 3rd day i drove about 50 miles up 95N here in MD that a puff smoke came out the tailpipe then my exhaust got a bit louder.... and sence then i havent seen any smoke and ive been driving it like crazy these past few days and it sounds good... the 17748 is a nice muffler....
