Ok, I know there have been many previous threads about the exhaust subject, but amidst all the arguing i still havent figured anything out. The bottom line is, this spring I plan on spending about 400$ on a whole new exhaust. the truck is a 3.9 magnum v6, 2001 extended cab short bed. What Im trying to figure out is, would it be cheaper to take it to an exhaust shop and just get a whole new one, manifolds back and everything. or would it be cheaper to put together one of my own. Also, I saw the video of the v-6 with the hooker aerochamber muffler, and I'd like something that sounded like that. the main thing is, i dont want it to sound like a ricer, if i spend 400$ and end up with a ricer sounding truck.... i'll shoot myself

here is the link for the dakota with the hooker aerochambers... thanks guys

Get a dynomax 11748 and a factory tail and you
will be very happy almost sounds like a V8 nice
low deep tone quite while crusing at highway
speeds and raps nice under excelleration

The rest of the exhaust is a low grade stainless
and should last a life time no reason to replace
the entire system

The only other thing to think about is a high
flow cat

The headers will not help but actualy show a loss
on the low end unless you improve the intake side
first
cold air
bigger TB
1.7 rockers

Than adding the headers will show you 10 to 15
hp at the wheels

Larry, did you mean 17748, the long Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler? That is the muffler I have on my 3.9L and it's perfect Ryan. Great sound at idle, and never obnoxiously loud. No one has ever thought it was a V6, honestly. It sounds nice during hard acceleration, but drones a little if cruising at low constant speeds (constant 1200-1500 rpms pretty much). The sound nearly dissapears while going 65-75 (2000 rpms) on highway, therefore making this muffler a great match for our 3.9L V6. I only replaced the muffler, and left the factory pipes since they are not bad at all. The whole swap costed less than $100, even with the welding labor.

thanks alec, one more quick question. if i left the factory 2.5 inch pipe and just replaced the muffler with a super turbo, would adding a 3" slashed tip change any sound or anything? would it lose backpressure with adding a 3" tip? because i really dont want to lose any low end tourqe. also i plan on adding one of those air raid cold air intakes in the spring as well. ive heard they can wake up that little 3.9 quite well. fyi the rest of the truck is all stock.

I'm not exactly sure about the effects of adding a 3" tip on the end. I'm almost sure any pipe or tip shorter than 1 foot would have any effect. I have a simple little stainless steel chrome tip welded on mine, and it does not effect either the sound, or power at all. It's only 6" inches long at most anyways...it's not doing much of anything.

As for the other mods to help power and gas milage...I have another post titled "Larry: Suggestion..." which lists a few good mods to buy. Larry's a smart guy, and i'm sure his advice will prove to be true.

Here's my list of mods to buy in order, with pricing.

1. Cold Air Intake $50
2. Dynomax 17748 (Muffler Only) $90
3. Superchips $290
4. 48mm F&B Throttle Body $360
5. 1.7 Harland Sharp Roller Rockers $300

Total Price: $1090
Total MPG increase (Projected): +3-5 mpg
Total HP/TQ increase (Projected): +35hp/45tq

I had a Dynomax single inlet / dual outlet put on my 96 3.9. They ran the tail pipes out the back.

I think it sounds a hundred percent better then the flowmaster I put on my 4.0 Jeep.
