Recall,
I called a local dodge dealership today about the possible ball joint recall on my 2001 Dakota 2wd. The service manager got the last eight of the VIN and checked. My truck does not have that recall. I also talked to him about the faulty AC drain at the firewall causing my passenger side floor to flood. He admitted it to be a design flaw for the Dakota, minivan, and Ram truck models. Only a TSB was issued for the wet floor problem and not a recall. I think this is total crap. It should be a recall. I installed a 3/4 elbow to the AC drain outlet and sealed around it with silicone since the cheap foam gasket had already rotted away and leaked water back into the firewall. Now I can see a nice and steady drip of water as it hits the road because the AC drain is now working properly. But, my floor is still soaked. I've sopped up a ton of water with towels but the water is so well trapped in the padding. There is also a bunch of black mold spores growing under the carpet. I think dodge should replace the carpet and padding in my truck due to their design flaw. The black mold spores are unhealthy and can cause illness. This makes the mold a safety issue so it should be a recall and not just a crappy TSB. What do you think? How can I go about stating my case to dodge?

Justin, not all years with balljoint problems were fixed under a recall. My '00 fell under the extended balljoint warranty and were replaced free. This was part of the recall. Some years got a recall and got extended warranty. Go to dodges website and use the last 8 digits of your VIN to check. Don't go on just one opinion of you local dealer.

Daddio,
I contact the service director at a local dodge dealership concerning the faulty AC drain outlet and the wet carpet and padding on the passenger side of my truck. They might be replacing the carpet and padding due to the black mold that is growing in it. I'll keep my fingers crossed on that one. The balljoint issue is also being investigated by the same service director. He's going to get back to me in the near future with what they plan to do about the water and balljoint problems.

That's good news. My '00 has never had any of the issues with the A/C drain. The drain just barely sticks out of the firewall with no elbow on it. And trust me, down here in the deep south, the A/C runs yeard round and we have plenty of humidity.

I have a suggestion for you. Go buy a simple 3/4 elbow fitting. Mine came from a local auto parts store. Get a few inches of 3/4 hose and some silicone. First seal around the AC drain tube with the silicone. There is a cheap foam gasket that tends to fail right there. The silicone will prevent you from having that problem. Next go ahead and slip on a piece of 3/4 hose about two inches long. Then install your elbow to the other end of the hose. Then you'll have a nice down-spout drain and prevent the big ugly mess that can easily happen. It has been explained to me in great detail that this drainage problem can start at any point. It's well worth the few bucks spent on parts and about 20 mins of your time to totally prevent it.

Below is the response I got today from the Dodge Dealership about correcting the water damage problem from the faulty AC drain outlet.

Dear Mr. DeVoe,

After some extensive looking under warranty policies and recall information, I didn’t find anything that would allow me to be able to do anything at this point. I wish there I could, but unfortunately I can only operate inside the perimeters that Chrysler will allow. What I can do though is give you the number for the Chrysler Customer Care line which is 1-800-992-1997, and you can call them and see if there’s something that can be done. After speaking with them and they decide to allows to help you I’ll be very happy to get whatever done I can for you. Again I am sorry I wish there was something I could do initially, but I can not. Please let me know how the conversation with Customer Care goes and if there’s anything I can do on my end I will certainly try.

Sincerely,
Clint Edwards
Service & Parts Director

Help! Advice Needed

I have a question concerning the 3.9L V6 in my 2001 Dakota. At times my truck will idle roughly. The truck will also stumble when I put my foot on the gas from a complete stop. This happens now and then. I've cleaned the intake system top to bottom with some throttle body spray and a toothbrush as a tip to possibly fix the problem. This didnt work. I have been told that a bad "belly pan" plenum gasket located inside the intake manifold is a common cause for this problem in the 3.9L. Also, a leaky intake manifold gasket can cause a vacume leak and make the motor idle roughly also. Ive been told that Dodge used crappy/cheap gaskets at the factory and they tend to degrade somewhat quickly. I can have the intake manifold gaskets and the plenum gasket replaced for around $450.00 parts and labor using a high quality gasket set. Any thoughts? Insight? Help?

First, check for codes. It sounds like it could just be the TPS which would only be about 30 bucks versus the Plenum Gasket set. If your Plenum Gasket were bad you would have a good bit of oil consumption with no sign of an oil leak. With the engine off, take the airhat off of the TB, open the throttle up and look down into the intake. If you don't see oil puddling, your Plenum Gasket should be OK.

Daddio,
Thanks for the advice. I removed the air hat from the TB and took a look with a flashlight. There is a bit of oil and some black sooty stuff. The truck has a new throttle position sensor, MAP sensor, and a new idle air. Hugesengines.com has a plenum plate upgrade with upgraded gasket along with the intake gaskets kits to correct the cheap plenum and gaskets from the factory. I went ahead and ordered the upgraded plenun with new gasket and bolts along with new intake manifold gaskets (upgrades) and new intake bolts. I also ordered a new 180 thermo to be installed. My local shop will install it all for $300 bucks. The total project will end up costing me about $470.00. I think the plenum glasket and the intake manifold gasket are not sealing properly thus the rough idle and stumbling. This kit I ordered is for the sole purpose of correcting the plenum and manifold problem common to the 3.9L. The upgraded plenum I ordered is a full 3/4 in thick and made out of better materials and the gaskets are higher quality. Like I said, the upgrade kit was ordered a few minutes ago. I figure its worth the money and effort on my part to have it totally taken care of and prevent further problems.
