Subject: 20.5 mpg!

I just wanted to say I was amazed that my 3.9L Quad Cab is nearly pulling 21 mpg on the interstate now. Superchips really does give a little boost of 1+ mpg. I have it set to the 87 octane setting, and put 89 octane gas in it do to slight pinging. Its slowly paying for itself, about $2.50 every fillup, or up to $140 a year.

economical motor

What the heck have you guys been smoking? 3.9 Economical engine? I took a trip recently just 110 miles in Iowa where its flat as flat can be. Drove the speed limit(70mph) the whole way and only managed 14.1 Mpg. It wasnt cold or windy. The only time I have seen one of these trucks do even near 20 mpgs is driving 50-55 on the moon....

3.92 Gears shouldnt make that much difference on mileage should it? Looked in the glove box and thats what I have. I turned the key on and off twice and I dont have any codes? I do have a funky 200-600 Rpm surge sometimes at cruising speeds 65+. And I momentarily lost cruise control while I was driving down the road. It was fine after turning the key off and on again. Only got 67k on it..

19-21 city, 24-27 highway(at approx 72 MPH). I once got 29.12, but that was a 400 mile straight stretch doing about 60 MPH. Tyler, sounds like your TPS might have a flat spot on it.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Having the TPS looked at is that a simple deal any Joe Schmoe garage can do? Or is it something that the dealer can only fix?

If you have a ohmmeter(buy a cheap one at radioshack) measure the resistance as you SLOWLY open the throttle valve. The resistance should SLOWLY increase, if it makes a dramatic jump (i.e. from say 75 ohms IMMEDIATELY to 10,000 ohms or drops back to 1 ohm) then it is faulty and needs to be replaced. They run about $30-$40 at autoparts stores.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

I have the stock 3.55 gears, and it's an automatic. I do have a more open exhaust and cold air intake. I also drive 70-72mph consistently, as my motor barely saves any gas under that speed. I'm now thinking of buying a 48mm throttle body to help my gas milage even more. Has anyone seen a definate improvement with this mod?

Alec, "I also drive 70-72mph consistently, as my motor barely saves any gas under that speed."

somehow i doubt that. i've seen reports that state for every 5mph over 55mph you lose about 3% in mpg. i know my truck gets considerably better mileage @ 65 than @ 75. even better @ 55-60.

try driving a little slower, when possible and see what happens.

I've got a 3.9 with 3.92 automatic, I get about 14mpg averaged over the past 6 months. (I hope my math is right, I had to go from Canadian Gallons to Imperial Gallons) That's mixed highway and city driving, mostly in the Canadian winter.

PS I don't drive like a grandpa.

can't say what my mixed or around town driving is, but i've put a great many highway miles on it. i always keep track on long trips. with me + some luggage i always get better than 26mpg cruising between 55 and 75

That's what I get, I wish it was much higher, maybe I'll sell it and get a 318 (then I could spin my tires)......

Maybe some of these guys on the board are like Chevy Drivers, It doesn't matter what the math says their truck gets 25mpg!

My 95 4X4 with the stroker motor 3.91 gears got
22 mpg on the highway

Map, IAT, o2 and engine temp sensor need to be
reading right to get good mileage.

That is why its a good idea to have your own
scanner like the auto xray obd1 $150 obd2 $200
you can hook the thing up drive down the road
and watch these sensors to be sure they are
all working properly.

Plugs shuld be a light tan color or something
is not right and should be corrected

Any intake side mod will help mileage
bigger throttle body, cold air and the 1.7
rockers if you keep your foot out of it will
show better mileage

After the intake side is improved than free up
the exhaust, high flow cat and low restriction
muffler and headers will help

The crank sensor mod will help mileage

After all this computer upgrades will show there
stuff

obd 1 performance comp 92 to 95
96 and 97 the jet stage 2 chips always show a
1 to 3 mpg gain
98 to 03 the superchips tunner

Its rare to see any dak V6's that I work on get
under 20mpg 4X4 or 2 wheel 3.91 gears only
change the rpm 200 and do not effect gas mileage
hardly at all maybe a few points

These mods good cap rotor and wires and all
sensors working good they get good mileage if
your getting bad mileage check the plugs and
o2 get the tan color and the mileage will be
there

A vac leak will cause ping and bad milege a lot
PCV valve and check all lines for lose or leaks

take the time and it will pay ou back at the pumps
