Not sure which one is responsible for the increase in MPGs, but thought I would post it here. I changed the PCV valve, broken EGR solenoid, new EGR valve and transducer, used Redline fuel treatment cleaner, and cleaned the sludge out of my crank case. They were all replaced or used on an individual basis and then driven. However, I didn't check the gas mileage until I was to empty. At empty I had 293 miles on 17 gallons flat. thats pretty good for me. I usually fill up at 275 miles and 18 gallon or more. I suspect it was the engine sludge cleaner that did the trick. Heard it is pretty harsh on the engine and all its components, but thought I would try it. Engine has 190K on it. First time engine clean too. I be filling up in a day or so to check again and make sure it isn't some mistake. see ya soon.

Have an engine flush done or do it yourself. I ran into issues with my 95 dropped to < 13/14 mpg regardless of city or highway driving. Ran 1 qt transmission fluid (people here mentioned using marvel mystery oil) in with rest oil and changed after 1k miles, ran all oil and changed after 500 or so miles (flush). Increased milage on long highway trip to ~23mpg. Found that pepboys offers an engine flush service. Paid for that, they told me that they got alot of crud out of it. After that, back to regular oil changes. Also now I use seafoam at every oil change.

my 94 (prior to the egr failure)
had numbers close to Dan's 95

i was getting an average of 24 MPG's
never had a problem with sludge
never had it "flushed"
once a year i run a qt. of "risolone"
in with the oil change
and i do however while running it change the filter at 1500 miles

wow mine only is getting average of 16-17 mixed city and highway driving. I have the 15gallon tank and am only getting 190-210 miles to a tank. 101k on the engine and just bought some seafoam so I'll try that and see what happens.

Just thought it should be mentioned. I am not a qualified mechanic so don't take this as gospel, but I was speaking to my dad about engine flushing. He mentioned it *could* be harsh on the engine and be weary on doing it on older cars. (anything with more than 100K) Mine is a 89 with 190K so I took a chance. And I can tell there is almost a mechanic humming noise now that I have flushed the engine. Its not loud by any standard and not harsh sounding. So don't know if it is a bad thing or if there is play in the engine now where there was once sludge. Supposedly it can effect the bearings inside the engine, or something to that effect. I think doing it too often has its side effects so I would contact the manufacture or somebody (qualified mechanic) to see whats really being eating out when dumping chemicals in your engine. Just my two pennies.

ck98daksport - you're actually doing pretty good - 16-17 mixed is about what I get, but I get 25mpg straight highway. Sounds to me like Joe M's 24 is mostly highway driving - either that or he's in Canada (Imperial gallons).
