The amber light reading 'anti-lock' just came on, along with a weird whining noise. My manuals are pretty vague as what to do to read out the codes. It says to "ground" the "Diagnostic Connector" and it will flash out the codes on the dash board.

When it says "ground" does that mean simply to connect the prong of the terminal (electrical connector) to the negative ground with a jumper wire? I did that and no codes. I am considering that "grounding" the connector could mean to only connect the negative wire to the terminal, and not the positive too. But not sure. Could some one inform me on what would happen if I tried as they say "completing the circiut" by using two jumper wires coming from the positive and negative posts of the battery.
I really need to figure this one out. Don't have a lot of money and mechnics cost about $80 an hour doing usually a half ass job if its not their car. Not all mechnics though. :)

My truck is a 89 V6 4x4.

One moe question. The RWAL Diagnostic connector... is that the plastic connector piece located on the left side cowl above the wheel space that is NOT connected to another electrical connector? It is vague in the manual that that is the connector to "ground." This is important and its still unclear. I am figuring it is because it is near the other brake connectors and it is hanging there capped, and not connected to any thing.

Please help.

Hey man...looks like you and I got the bad brake Beaters. ;) Anyway...to help with your question...there is a small plug on the far right side of the passenger compartment...it is on the right side of the glove compartment door but tucked up under some plastic a bit. To ground it...just take an alligator clip and clip one side to the prong in the plug...and the other side to the frame area where the plug is mounted. The anti-lock brake light will flash to reveal the error code. You only need to plug one jumper to the prong in the plug and then connect the other side of the jumper to anything that is grounded in the truck (ie...the metal part of the frame right next to the plug.) Once you do this...turn the ignition 'on' and the code will flash. Do you have a list of codes?

Hey, I just figured that out. Thanks though. I spent a lot of my time today looking for it inside the engine compartment. Finally found a diagram that showed it in the cab like you said.

Let me know how the brake booster goes.

PS. How many miles do you have on your truck? I got too many. lol. 190K, one rebuilt tranny, and too many to list fixed parts. :)

I just hit 215K. I too have one rebuilt tranny and a laundry list of other replaced parts. Although...I have to say...up until this brake problem, most of the maint. has been standard stuff. (hoses, batteries, water pumps, belts, shocks, master cylinder, plugs, oil pressure sending unit [went out at about 200K so keep your eye on that one]) This break thing is turning into a nightmare though. I've done the master cylinder, rwal sensor on the pumpkin, a SECOND master cylinder when the first replacement was no good...now the booster leak and the doggone indicator lights won't go away. I haven't had ABS in the back since the original master cylinder went bad. Can't figure that one out to save my life.

LOL!

I've done probably about the same amount of work on my truck. It seems endless. ie: ... I don't run out of a list of things to do with this truck.

Also, I am at a similar point of view on my pick-up as you. My lug nuts went out the other day.!? You know, I knew this truck was old, but when too many of the little things fall apart I wonder how the thing keeps going. I mean, it still works but I know now that time is running out. Time to save for a new truck.

But in the end, I learned a lot of stuff and rarely got bit in the ass by mechnics. Even be friended a mechnic recently cause he saw my torque wrench while working on my stalled truck. ( Some things I can't fix like no codes and intermitten engine stalls. ) Anyways, fun truck.

just an idea, seeings how i had the same problem. check the connector at the rear end. mine was corroded. i cut it off and soldered the wires together. i also checked my computer for controling them (i can't tell you all the technical bable sorry). in my 90 it's located on the wall behind the carpet on the passenger side in the foot well. it's a lil box mounted on the wall (not the fire wall), when you look at it you'll be like "what the hell does this do?". make sure the connector is still plugged together tightly and not corroded. (i think someone stepped on the wiring for mine and pulled it a bit loose) as this is the control module.

Thansk Josh.
I found it almost by mistake just a few hours after I posted here. gosh, where were you guys when I needed ya? ;-) Nah, I still needed the help.
Oh, and I think you're right on that sensor thing. It doesn't seem to be related to any broken brake parts or anything. Just a bad sensor. Not sure if I want to solder the lines together, but that brake light sure does get annoying.

Take care.
