I forgot to mention

the cab bolts got bent I'm lucky they didn't snap
the cab would have separated

you can see that it is obvious I would say a good 1 inch sway bend point from the bed

it's another thing on the recall list

ABS is only standard on the REAR wheels...therefore, your fronts will still lock up and you will skid.

The air bags go off only when the sensors are tripped...if you hit at an angle or hit a point where it doesn't set that sensor off, you're air bags aren't going to work. I bet if you'd hit a brick wall head on, you would have set both of them off (unless you had the passenger one set to 'off').

Honestly...it sounds like you were just going too fast for conditions.

thanks for thought

I was at a 20 mph (60ft from turn) brake point hydroslid into car
another factor is it's problem intersection

I read in this forum about brakes locking up

the RWAB's on the daks are not the best but i know mine work. as far as airbags- i broadsided a schoolbus @ about 35mph and took out the whole front end on my truck from the bumper up and the airbags never went off. saved my about 2g's on the repair bill though.

One thing a lot of people do not realize is rubber on the road. In heavy traffic areas, the rubber builds up from the tires when there's a spell between rain falls. When it rains the combination can be close to ice conditions. To hydroplan is for the water to be deep enough to lift your truck up off the pavement. You become an unsteerable boat. Although a wet road is much more slipery then dry, not likely you hydroplaned at 50 unless your talking about a river of water.Glade everybody was ok including the pup. Luck was with you that day.

So many problems .... So little time

You were. When it starts to rain, the water lifts road oil up and greases the pavement. Still sounds like you went too fast. As stated, standard ABS is for rear wheels only. The fronts can lock up and you can still slide.

These trucks take considerably longer to stop than my 92 Daytona. You have to plan for it when driving.

shdow- ABS was never designed or intended to decrease your stopping distance. It's purpose is to allow you to maintain DIRECTIONAL control of the vehicle. The function of rear-wheel-only ABS is to (hopefully) prevent the lightweight back end (of an empty pickup truck, for instance) from getting sideways on you.

OBIO3- the Volvo was doing 50 - shdow said HE skidded at 20, so you're right, there's no way he was hydroplaning.

Aren't the air bags on most newER vehicles also designed not to go off in low speed collisions...like under 25mph or something? I could be wrong...but I thought I'd read that somewhere.

i had to brake suddenly once and it appeared that the rear wheels had locked up - until i really started to analyze what had happened. the rear wheels never 'locked up' - they simply slid on the super dry dusty desert pavement because the bed was empty and the fronts did most of the work due to the forward inertia pressing on them and lifting the rear. it that instance, i was actually dragging the rear wheels as they slid maybe 5 feet forward and a foot to the side.
in other words - due to teh lack of weight on them, the rears stopped spinning before the truck was stopped. the fronts didn't lock up even though they arent abs because they had enough weight to keep them on the ground and i didn't stomp the pedal to the floor, i pressed it hard but controlled.

you may have experienced a similar occurence - your rears came to a 'controlled' abs style stop but were dragged or hydro'd as the front has a lot of weight and teh rear doesn't when empty. you may also have locked the fronts as they arent abs, sliding on the greasy road.
so quite possibly, the abs rears did do their job as best they could, but the empty bed let them 'float' on the wateradding to the problem not helping it.

Everyone wants to add their two cents. I had a similar experience with front wheel lock up in the rain. I was driving normal driving speeds in wet weather. Took my eyes off the road to adjust radio. Looked up, and saw an unexpected red light and a already stopped car, in my path. Pulled steering wheel to turn while hitting the brakes. I immediately went into a skid and the rear end of a Ford Escort. Smashed my fog light, trashed the Ford. All due to the rain and my driving. Not likely the fault was my vehicle but more my lack of experience in wet weather and braking.

Honestly...I think that would be more attributed to not paying attention in the first place.

lmfao,

hey want another few pennies for that jar?
dont rule out he didnt hydro
i dont know what the weight diffs would be on his 98 to my 94 but in a good rain fall
on the highway i have to slow and hang on
the ass-end of my truck has fishtailed
more then a few times & when a semi is passing
i've also had it happen! that wind off one
(i'll guess his speed at 75+) has also pushed the ass-end of my dak into a wet road skid!
(uncomfortable feeling to say the least)
this truck is so damn light in the back
also had it weighed with a 1/4 tank
(me not in it) 3180 and prob 85% or more of that is over the front wheels

Prodak,

LOL. I mean, why did that light turn red in the first place. What was it thinking. I should check that light for defects, or read the wiring diagram to make sure its operating properly. Who knows maybe it skipped yellow. :)
