Subject: Gas leak?

I have an '89 4WD 3.6.
Lately when I get out of the truck, I smell gas. I have checked for leaks underneath, but there is nothing visible. Unless it is a very, very slow leak.
I just put on a new fuel filter recently. Any connection to doing that?

Your overfill tube is probably leaking, I have a 90 Dakota and it sometimes leaks when I fill the tank all the way up and I smell gas. Just a start.

Thanks. How hard is that to get to? Approximately where is it located on the tank?
Thanks,
Dave

I have a 90 3.9 4x4. I never had a gas smell problem on it. However, my Ford is another story. I had a faulty injector that just dumped gas into the engine. It was hard to strat after it sat for 15 - 20 minutes. You didn't mention a hard start so it may not be an injector. Check the fuel filter area. A gas leak will normally 'clean' the area it leaks on. Also check the fuel rail. You'll never see a leak on the ground from a leak from the rail. Again, check for 'clean' areas. You didn't mention if you smell the gas from the front, back, driver's or passenger's side, uner the truck or in the engine compartment.

Yes I have had the same problem with my 91' Dakota, I always smelt gas when getting out of my car. When I went to check for leaks there was nothing, so i thought it was just the overflow, but after a while the smell got stronger, and a puddle formed, Well anyways i found the leak, it was the fuel line, that comes from the fuel filter where the gas tank is, just a tiny hole maybe a pin size but that's all it needed. i still haven't got around to fixing it cause its to expensive here where i live. But i have got a bandaid kinda thing working for now.
