question. was curious if my egr was working and I don't have a vacuum pump handy. So I unhooked it's vacuum lines and electrical. I've noticed no diffence in the way the motor runs at all. Is this symptoms of a faulty egr? or would it not be noticable. I've read other threads where it's mentioned that a bad egr causes stalling and it's never stalled on me.

It helps to give others a run over whats wrong with the truck, but just as preventive maintence goes you can always check the trucks on-board computer. Depending on the year of your make it can be as simple as turning the ignition 3-5 times without turning the engine over and watching what codes it reads as its displayed on the check engine light, or you hook it up to a tool that reads it for you in codes, numerical.
For starters, I would buy a Haynes, Chilton, or whatever else is out there for maintence on your truck. I own a 89 Dakota. I bought the Haynes handbook and thought it was vague in some areas. Next I bought the 'Service Manual' that is specific to my truck from a "Mopar Manuals" online. It was $70 bucks but it does cover the basics a little more extensively.
If you choose to work and take apart you car, I advise to buy one of these. That way you got a fighting chance. But I do admire your courage to tinker around under the hood. Its fun to do some times, but remember what or where or how the darn thing went when it comes to putting it back together. :)

Take care,
_Matt

yea I bought a service manual off ebay for cheap. was just wanting to get some other opinions b4 I go out and buy anything. truck has almost 150k on it and I have no idea what kind of upkeep any other owners did. I've already done alot of work to the truck as it is. So I doubt they did much.

O-pinions? Can't hurt to replace it. I had mine replaced at the last smog check two years ago and I am getting codes to replace it again. I bought a new one online for 55-65 bucks from Kragen Auto Parts. I don't believe they have the best quality, but its not a performance mod or anything. Just maintence.
Oh. Also, I bought a vacuum hand pump for $50 bone at a local mechanics shop. There are better ones out there than the one I bought. It works but is small volume and plastic grade. I started the 'inspection' procedure on my ERG valve about two weeks ago. Got to step one and couldn't see the marking line on the valve stem to indicate proper operation. So. I am replacing it. No vacuum check for me. lol. Good luck! 'an go Get'Em!
