Subject: Timing Chain Rattle- big deal?
IP: Logged

Message:
Seems no one knows for sure; is the 3.9 rattle just a noise or does it indicate a problem with the chain, that could lead to premature failure, etc?

I think half the guys I ask say it's just a harmless noise and half say it means my timing chain is gonna fall off!

Any more info available? Opinions?

Thanks.

How much mileage on the truck? Mine started slapping at 50K (with about 6 degrees of slop) so I replaced it with a double roller, but I've read posts where people say their's has been noisy for a long time, like over 100K with no problem. Enough slack will eventually degrade performance, so if you can do it yourself I'd replace it - a decent double roller timing set is <$60 (good idea to replace the water pump too while you're that far into it).

My truck has 198,000 miles on it. Still has original timing chain. It has made a rattle noise from day one. I'm not worried about replacing it. If it skips I will do it then.

whats this rattle sound like a metal to metal type of thing or just a constant tapping? does it increase when your throttle goes up or only at idle. Can you take a screwdriver and do the sound test and hear it up front by takin a screw driver and listening to the motor while running. Im asking because im tryin to diagnose the noise on my truck thanks.

The rattle on my truck is only noticable at idle it is a constant sound. It sounds like chains and gears running,(low rumble) I can't think of any other way to describe it.

My truck has 92,500 on the clock.

The ticking is only noticable at idle.

Otherwise, the turck runs great. She has good power and gets good mileage. I put a new set of plugs in around 89,000. No warning lights or anything.

if you let the timing chain keep slappin around youll end up with a bigger problem then noise if it breaks IT WILL ruin your engine its an easy fix so go get the parts and do it before you have to end up payin 900 bucks for a new motor!

It can stretch enough to cause valves to hit pistons. I'd replace it (and I did). If nothing else, it's hurting your performance a little.

I thought the Magnum engines were "non-interference" engines. So that if you snap the chain, it will stop running but wont destroy the engine..

yes the magnum engines are non-interference.
it wont ruin your engine. but you will be stranded pretty good cause it is not a roadside fix to replace the chain

Hey 87dakota4x4 I found out what the sound was in my truck. I just had my clutch relpaced in my truck (198,000 miles on original clutch, not bad) and the noise has gone. Not sure what part of the clutch was making the noise but the clutch has been very hard to push in from day one. Thought that that was the way it suspose to be. After getting the new clutch I think the old clutch had something wrong with it when I got the truck.

I replaced my chain and was able to track it down with a
stethoscope, on the bottom side of the Timing Case,
right in front of the oil pan. Just be careful since the fan
is only a couple of inches away.

People keep saying the Magnum engines are non-interference, well they're wrong, at least with the 3.9. First hand experience with bent valves and curved pushrods in a 92 Dakota 3.9 that had a sudden timing chain failure tells me different. The shiny divots in the top of the pistons indicated some interference too ;) It's a lot easier to fix a noisy timing chain than it is to fix a broken timing chain and have two heads redone.....

there ya go
hell and that is exactly what happens when a timing chain slips!

its pretty easy to figure out
the basic working of the engine
would tell you alone what will happen

pistons going up and down
valves going up an down
what keeps them in perfect time
as not to have a piston going up
as a valve is going down?
that would be the timing chain!

i cant believe
somebody would try and tell this kid
dont worry nothing bad will happen

anyway he has it know right from the horses mouth
glad you posted Dennis
and i remember your first post (think your the same guy?)
they tried telling you nothing could happen when the chain slipped & me and a few others told you to check into bent valves
