Subject: Need Help: 98 Dakota Oil Pump
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 Dakota slt 4x4, and I am having problems with the oil pressure. I started it up the other day and the oil gauge went crazy and then dropped completely, then it would jump back up and then drop and stay down. So at first i thought the sending unit was going bad but then the engine started making a ticking noise and vibrating pretty bad when I would give it gas, so I quickly parked it. The motor was definitely making a different noise that was not normal. So now im not sure if it is the sending unit or the oil pump.
would a bad sending unit cause this? or is it the oil pump? and how difficult is it to change an oil pump on the 98 dakota? can you access it through the oil pan?
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks alot

try the sending unit about $18 and check the plug-in for corrosion[greenish color]clean and put a little dielectic grease on $5-6 a tube

i think you can change the oil pump on a 98 with the motor still in truck[can on the genI AND II]
by removing the pan, pump is about $30 at carquest,

it may be slugde in the pan and motor plugging the pick-up screen, you,ll know when you remove the pan,if this is the case remove the valve covers and clean as much out as you can,put a catch cantainer under motor and flush with kerosene by pouring it down thru the motor, this will help remove some and then put back together, change oil filter,a can of engine flush
[seafoam etc]fill with oil, run engine as directions on seafoam, change oil and filter again, you may need to do this twice to flush it all out

Ok thanks alot, so you think that it could possible be the sending unit even though the motor is making a different noise?

It sure sounds like the oil pump to me. from your description you may have damaged your engine. They just don't like running with no oil pressure.

either the pump is worn, pick up is clogged. but, either way if it is making different/not normal noise you could ahve some damage. drop the pan and check it out.

I dont think I have damaged anything yet, because as soon as I noticed that something wasnt right, I shut it off. and the thing is, as soon as I start my truck the gauge and motor are both fine. then after it runs for a while (gets hot) the oil pressure gauge starts acting up and the motor starts to have a small vibrating to it. So the motor does this after the gauge drops, which made me think it was the oil pump. But I have been told that when the oil pump goes out, it just flat dies, and not get worse with time. So if it just the sending unit, dont you have to have a special socket to take the sending unit off?? if so where could I find one??
Thanks Alot Guys!

My 99 was doing the same thing, and all I did was remove the connection from the sending unit, clean it up, and put it back. That was about a year ago, and it's been fine ever since.
