How much work would it be to swap from the 3.9 v6 to the 318 cid engine in my 1994 dokota 4x4?I want to rebuild a 318 and put it in in place of the 3.9 thats in there now.The 318 used to be a great engine for fuel economy and more pulling power that the 3.9.Thanks a bunck from Dakota4x4.

I lot of pepole on this board will tell you it is simpler to "trade it in and get one with a V8". I have asked in the past on this also, from what I understand you will need the computer, wire harness or you will have to wire in for the extra injectors, flywheel. The V6 tranny will bolt up but is not as strong as the V8 tranny so it may die soon after the swap, As for motor mounts I have heard that the V8 is the same as the V6 and I have heard that they are diferant, I do not know. Good luck on the project.

Thanks Dakota Red,what i will probabably do is when the 3.9 dies i will just bore out 30 thou oversize and put a mild cam in.Then a chip in the computor and headers and some help up top in the breating dept. This should net me more that the stock 5.2 v8 would provide and still get reasonable horse power?

if you want to reach the output of a stock 5.2 a simple overbore and a cam won't be enough. you'll have to stroke it. check www.hughesengines.com or www.krcperformance.com or others for a stroker kit. i think larry @ J & J is about 300hp with his.

i forgot to add. it's porbably gonna be about 4 grand when it's all said and done. others will tell you swap in an 8 but, a hi-po 6'er is a little more uncommon.

haha yeah he's right your v6 probably won't die until about 400,000 miles. of cousre you will have replaced your tranny 2-3 times in that time.

But those v6 engines last forever.

When i do my swap (in 109 years) i am going to put the 3.9 in my golf cart.

Hey there justin a guy i know not far from me has 500,000 kms on his with the original auto o/d trany and its just starting to burn oil now? Mine has 225,000 kms on her.The lifters are a little noisey but the previous owner said it was this way from new so because they are a roller rocker lifter in the 1994 magnum v6 im not worryed.Another friend worked as a doge mechanic here for a # of years and said they did replace some of the lifters in these engines under warranty and none of them showed any signs of whare?I think he said that the pressure valve in the lifters when the engine warm and at a slow idle wasnt strong enough to keep the oil pressure high enough at idle and the new lifters now for that engine have a differant pressure vave so they pump up better at idle when warm.As soon as you speed the engine up even just a couple hundred rpm the lifters quiet right down.I also need to know whats involved with replaceing the power mirror on this dakota as my mirror and housing is cracked on the driver side?

I've got a 1996 Dakota 4x4 with 90,000 km on it and have also been thinking of swapping out the 3.9L for a V8 too. I've been told swapping for a V8, I would be better of just buying one with the V8 in it than paying out for a swap. Got any better ideas.
Thanks.

you could spend about 4 g's on a blower system. you may be better off trading for a v8. it all depends what YOU want. don't let anyone else decide that for you. would you rather stroke the 6'er? would you rather add a supercharger? how about nitrous? do you want to race it? tow with it?

The Dakota I'm driving is currently my daily driver so, If I was interested in a modest power increase on it what would give me the better bang for the money and still keep it driveable. It's a 3.9L Magnum V6. I only have a K&N filter on it and a performance exhaust from the converter back. Power increase as in 50-100 more HP. The issue with the motor swap for the future will wait until there is more mileage on it I think.

for that much of an increase - nitrous. v8 TB will get about 12hp. 1.7RR's about another 15hp. headers, maybe another 15. 50-100hp over stock, you're talkin' 225 to 275hp. not gonna be cheap.

Justin, check the torque of that 4banger. Also, you need to look at the power curves of each engine. the v6, i'm pretty sure has a much flatter hp & torque curve than that honda 4 banger. which means the dak has more overall hp & torque. you just can't look @ peak numbers.

That's very true. I just wish they made one size engine in dakotas....BIG. like a 6.0 that put out about 300 HP, that'd be great.
