Subject: HELP KNOCKING at Idle

Message:
Ok i have a 87 dakota with a decent amount of miles on it. Prolly closer to 200 thousand than 100 thousand. Before my previous oil change i ended up getting a slight knocking noise at idle. (ive always changed the oil every 3,000) So i changed the oil and the knocking is still there. Heres the catch though Its not rediculously loud. It went away after a few long drives but now it seems like its sticking around. It is only at idle though. and then as you give it some gas it goes away. Or so becomes so faint you cant here it over everything else.

My thoughts were either a crank bearing, or a lifter. But I just did a 200 mile drive up to vermont and 200 mile drive back and no problems the hole trip just when i come to stop at a light theres the nocking. It isnt defined to one side. IT almost seems like its in the center or up front. I really hope it isnt a crank bearing.Which makes me think its not a crank bearing Wouldnt it of blown up? Now on the way back from vermont my temp gage started to jump, from normal temp to really cool, so this makes me assume it might be the water pump going? Sorry im throwing out all these possibilities but im trying figure out what the problem is. Id think if it was a crank bearing it would get worse as the RPM goes up or my motor would of blew up after this trip, Im wondering if anyone else has this problem and really lookin for some help. Sorry for such a big post but i figured the more information the better we can diagnose the problem. Might i add that at idle when its making the noise it doesnt run rough. It runs the same as it always had.

(p.s. dont mind my spelling) im only looking for help here no bashing.

knocking. well just answer the door DUDE!!! hehe...
jokes aside, could be a lifter. could be EGR causing spark knock. you're right about the crank increasing with RPM. my first guess would be faulty EGR, cuasing the excessive heat, and knock. thats my guess. pull the egr and see if it looks filthy in side. clean it and reinstall than if it persists, then I'm up a creek....

Yea well i did the screw driver test (when i take it to every part on the motor when its running and put ur ear to it to see if u can find the spot its comeing from) And i found nothing around the water pump or on the valves. But i think i found the problem. I have a cracked manafold for a really long time, but it was only on the outside and once the truck warmed up it was seal back up because of heat. Might i add it never made the noise that it has now with this particular crack. Well on the back side of it isnt the case when the truck is at idle it leaks out the back of it (it must of cracked more with all the long trips ive been doing) and it the flow of air goes with the sound. when you give it gas the manafold must heat up and it shuts making hte noise go away. Good thing is its not something major and i already have a extra one to replace it. Bad thing is getting the bolts off is gonna be fun seeing how there all rusted and basically heated into place. (any suggestions on what to do to take them off when i go to replace this)? i know ill cover them in a solvent to try and losen them a little better
