It probably has a 3:55 gear ratio in it now. That's more than enough for what a 3.9 puts out.
Honestly, I'd use my money elsewhere. Look into exhaust and possibly tuning (computer mods).

i am considering going with 4.10's and limited slip. i have 3.55s with an open diff in my 2000 quad cab v6 2wd.
GET IN, SIT DOWN, SHUTUP, AND HOLD ON
custom 48mm tb, tps @ .768, relocated IAT, 180 t-stat, autolite double platinum, taylor wires, flowmaster 40 delta flow single in/dual out, CAI, superchips tuner

yeah what dave said, definately go with 4.10's especially if you're not a hardcore freeway driver.
oh and dave, i have an issue with the amp/throttle body trade off (i'll be emailing you soon)
i wish i didnt though :/

i went from 3.55 to 4.10, '02 v6 auto 2wd. excellent mod, shoulda done it first thing.

I put 4:10 gears in my truck. Runs good. Alot faster off the line. I tow a trailer also and didn't have any problems. It topped off at 85mph when I was towing though!!! I think the best mods for your buck are:
Throttle body
Air Intake
AIC relocation
Autolight Plugs
4:10 GEARS

The gears are nice.
I went from 3.55 to 4.10s on my quad(with 31" tires i think) Around town my mileage went up. My highway mileage is lower then intown driving but stayed the same as before i did the gear change.
This is one mod i havent regreted doing.

got a question, when gettin the gears for it, can you just buy a whole new rear-end with limited slip, and if so, which would be the best bet for my 92 dakota 3.9, I've already done an intake, throttle body space, fuel air intake chip, torrnado wich was actually better on gas then preformace. I'm guessin my ratio is 3.55 but would love some advice, and if not, am I just able to weld the rear-end to create a posi tracktion, even though it wont go to smooth around turns?
