I've been to the dealership twice (2000 Dakota V6) per the engine surging after 40 to 60 miles on freeways. They charged me $300 to check for codes which were all negative. They then did a fuel injector cleaning & full tune-up for another $219. The problem persists & is now getting worse. Returned to dealer, they kept it for 4 days & said nothings wrong. It got so bad last week I was almost rear-ended on the bridge. I'm not sure the dealership has a clue. I know I don't! I've noticed the tach jumping from 2 to 3.5 K during the 'surges', and it doesn't happen except on drives at freeway speeds for more than 30 miles. Please, any suggestions? Many thanks!

with the tach jumping that far that quickly, it sounds much more like a tranny problem...perhaps the 30 mile mark is where the OD builds up enough heat and randomly jumps back to 3rd?

Does your truck have cruise control? Its possible to have a malfuntion in the control box. try disconecting the cruise control cable and try it again. I recomend trying it at night do to less traffic.

Had the same prob it is the TPS (Throttle position sensor), the sensor on the right side of the TB standing in front of the truck looking at the TB. Should be less than $50 at NAPA. Easy fix!!!

I'll check into it, thanks! Over the holidays, the check engine light came on at the same time it was surging (surging is worse than ever before). After I got home, not only did the surging stop, but the check engine light went back out!

I never had a check engin light come on but than again it never jumped 1500 RPM, mine jumped more like 500-600 RPM. Good Luck.

If the light came on, there is a code stored now. Have Autozone check it for free for you.

I just had a problem on a trip south where the tranny kicked down to 3rd at the slightest touch on small hills, after driving 800 miles that day. It also raced and screamed at 2000 RPM immediately on a cold start, and dropped to normal 1000 when I kicked the throttle (and it's fuel injection, not carbureted). I replaced the throttle position sensor and all is fine.
