There are a couple of things you can do:
1. take the lead out of the food, that's the most efficient way to save some gas
2. cut off the snorkel from the air cleaner and expand the hole to like 3", so the engine gets warmer air and needs less fuel (you gonna loss couple hp, but save quite some gas)
3. make sure you stay on top of maintenance (spark plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air filter and so on)

All good advice, especially the airbox mod. And if you make the hole big enough - mine is about 5" diameter - you'll gain mpg AND performance. It's not the stock filter that's restrictive on the 3.9, it's the damn box. Trust me, that engine is a whole lot happier getting hot air through a 5" hole than trying to suck cool air through a 2.5" snorkel.

So Prodak, instead of increasing the hole size, what would
happen if you left the cover off the air filter box?
Sorry for the stupid question, but you answer got me curious.

1. lift your right foot.
2. visit a honda Toyota, or Kia dealer.
Now that I got the obviously retarded things that NONE of us will ever think of doing.... I have a lot to say, so I forwarn you, this is gonna take a minute.... try the K&N fipk, I gained 5mpg on my R/T with that alone. get a cheapie tonnou cover if you drive on the hwy a lot. that bed creates a lot of drag at hwy speeds I gained almost 3 MPG on hwy with that added. one thing thats cheap and easy is adding a auxiliary tranny cooler if you have a auto trans... keeping that fluid cool helps the tranny grab better, I gained 2 with that.... so, overall, I added 7 on city and 10 to hwy. I currently am at 19 city, and 22 on the hwy (LOL when I monitor my right foot. average NORMAL driving, I get about 12 City and 17 Hwy with the 5.9 liter

Proper tuning too, spark plugs, wires, etc.... I just did a tune up on a car, it had (NO BS) 200,000 miles on the spark plugs. yea, thats NOT a typo. 200K. on the friggin PLUGS!!!!! the guy gained almost 8 MPG. run a fuel system cleaner everyonce in a while, it helps to insure the fuel injectors are clean, and producing a good spray pattern, and don't forget to swap that fuel filter every 30k or so.

definetely agree with the tire pressure and alignment too, but make sure you're getting decent tires, and keep em the stock size, larger tires add weight to the rotation mass, and create tire aero dynamic issues... wider tires gotta move more air outta the way to contact the road, its a wierd for of drag on a vehicle.
more expensive stuff would be to lower the vehicle, which limits the amount of air the goes under the vehicle, lessens drag. OR if you can afford it, get a daily driver car, a beater car, something else for when the gas costs is hitting your wallet. I normally drive my Intrepid R/T, gets almost 30mpg, and save my R/T for the weekends. it was a big expense, but when GAS hit 3.20 a gallon I was glad I had it... you should be able to find a cheap POS honda for around 500-1000, and use it when gas gets out of hand....

other stupid little things that are incorporated with hi MPG< a GOOD coat of wax. it may be good for only 1mpg but that adds up. a dirty vehicle has a bit more drag effect on the aerodynamics. OK, I warned you it was stupid, but its true!

I'm not calling you a liar by any means, I'm sure you believe the numbers you posted, but I'm afraid you're a victim of wishful thinking. First of all, if you're not getting torque converter clutch lockup on the highway then something is wrong - most of us don't need a tranny cooler for that. Secondly, it's possible you gained 5mpg with the CAI, but more than likely you were simultaneously replacing a VERY dirty stock filter.
The math on the tonneau cover has already been done by people much smarter than you or I, and sorry, it just doesn't decrease drag enough to account for that big of a mpg gain. And car wax won't get you enough to even measure.
The one big factor you didn't mention is speed - at highway speeds a 5mph difference can cost you 2mpg.
Again, I'm sure you are sincere, but your results are simply not credible.

Hey Larry,
I did the IAT, and the Crank sensor mods, the FR5's, cold air intake, MSD coil and wires (not the MSD box)HS 1:7RR's,The Dynomax 17748 and the V8 TB. I got a bit more power but never saw any mpg increase. I get 16city-20hwy. What am I missing?
Now I need my trans rebuilt. The shop I talked to said 1500-1800$ for the rebuild, That includes the converter, upgraded sol/sensor, seals etc..
Is that a reasonble price?
