I've got a 93 Dakota 3.9 with about 150,000 miles on it. I need to replace my waterpump and thought it would be an opertune time to go in and replace/upgrade the time chain. I've read a little bit about an upgrade to the tensioner system to help limit rattling. Can someone tell me where these parts are purchased - dealer only? - manufacturer? - any tips I need to know? Also, any preferences - good or bad experiences with particular water pump manufactures? Thank you.

I have a 2000 and I replace the water pump at 75k. I went with a new pump instead of a reconditioned pump from Napa. Get the "double throw me down" gasket (heavy duty with RTV already applied. I pulled the whole rack off to make things easier. While I was at it I replaced the T-stat. I bought a Generation II Prestone T-stat. MISTAKE!! Prestones GenII Stat bottoms out on the water jacket in the closed position. I went back to Shuck's (go figure?) and they swore it was correct. Hold on to your old T-stat to compare, but stay away from the Prestone T-Stats. I emailed Prestone on the subject and they said that the item works as described. BS!! As for the Timing chain kits either stay stock or go to a performance parts store, should be an easy find.

If it ain't broke, your not trying!

Thanks for the advice. I replaced the T-stadt and hoses a couple years ago when I put a new radiator in. At the time I looked at the old stadt, looked at the new one, and said to myself "Should I really replace it?" Well as it turns out, I'm driving home from work the other day and the temp guage goes WAY UP - then drops down to nomal - then up again - down, up, down. I pulled over to check the water. The upper radiator hose had sprung a small leak where it rubs on the A/C tubes and gets squashed by the hood. (Nice design work, Mopar engineers!) So I openned the cap and the radiator was still nearly full, but no circulation when the engine is running and warm. And the top of the radiator tank was cold. I had replaced the serp belt a couple weeks ago and noticed the water pump bearings had some axial play. So I'm figuring the T-sadt is sticking or the pump impellers are shot, or a little of both. Since I'll be off work for a few days I figure I better just go ahead and replace the pump, hoses, T-stadt, and flush the heater core, as it's not been putting out any too much heat. Then, as one thing always leads to another, I'm thinking that at 150,000 miles it might be a good idea to go in and replace the timing chain while I'm there. Of course if this all works out well I might want to fix the sagging headliner. And then, since the body is still in very good condition, a new paint job........ (and it just never ends).
