I have an unusual issue with my 2003 Dakota SXT. My heat will go out, kicking out cold air, and my engine thermostat goes up, sometimes until the engine heat light comes on. After a short time it seems to fix itself, the heat comes back and the engine cools down. Any ideas as to what is causing this? The only suggestion I have gotten is an air pocket in the coolant.

Sounds like a blocked coolant flow somewhere. Can you get under the hood when the engine temp light comes on? If so, check the coolant hoses, are they tight and hot to the touch? Check the heater hoses (small hoses in and out of water heater) are they hot too? Maybe your water pump is going bad or your thermostat is stucking closed. Is your coolant level good?

IMO, either low on coolant or a sticking t-stat.

with all due respect > Here is my guesses > Ruling out the thermostat because if it stuck open or closed the heater would still work accordingly > Air pocket is a good possibility > Low coolent is another > The lower radiator hose colapsing causing coolant passage to stop or be way to slow is a good posibility > If it should be an air pocket it will be in a head > Better fix it soon as possible before you worp a head or lose a head gasket > Good luck > So many problems > So little time
