Subject: 92Dakota TPS specs

Message:

92 3.9 has very poor idle especially when cold. Had recent tune up,replaced Oxy. sensor,IAC and TPS. The old TPS had .61 v at closed throttle and 3.38 at wide open , the new one gave almost the same readings .62 & 3.40. Isn,t this a bit low? Voltage at the input wire from the computor was right on 5.0 Battery voltage was 12.68. I couldn't find the specs in the Hayens repair for testing. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a 95 3.9L

I have a subscription to alldatadiy and it says output voltage of TPS should be > 200 mV with ignition on/engine off. at WOT it should be < 4.8V.

If you look at the trouble codes on allpar.com, it says TPS should be < 4.96V.

How did you test yours? Did you backprobe or use small jumper wires connectiving the sensor to the wire connector? I made some small jumper wires using small insulated alligator clips I picked up from radio shack. I found this to be the best way for testing sensors like this (came in especially handy with MAP sensor). I soldered the wire and crimped. I stripped enough wire to plug into the connector and leave a little exposed to touch with my multimeter.

Here are the clips I used:

Thanks Dan,I just probed through the wire with a multimeter. Yeah, jumper wires would probably give a more accurate reading but the TPS seems to be within the range. As well as poor idle it also backfires at low speed when cold, pop pop out the tailpipe almost as if the timing is off. Never does this once it is fully warmed up. Don't know what the proplem is.

Zzark thanks for the link. I might try that mod once I get the idling sorted out and now I have a spare TPS.

have you looked at the distributer pickup? I am still trying to find the root cause of backfiring (low and high speed now) and hesitation (sometimes at low speed acceleration). I also had occasional rough idle. Now the the truck also died exiting the highway coming to a stop once. Also, at low speed and high speed i'll have rpm fluctuation (with and without cruise) rpm will bounce 200 (say running 1600, it'll bounce a few times from 1600 to 1400 and back).

I have replaced TPS, MAP, IAC, EGR, distributer picke up and coil. The distributer pick up and coil seemed to fix the most issues (truck ran 4 days with no issues since replacing those to things). See my post on backfire while accelerating.

Good luck
