Subject: 3.9L Holley Throttle Body

Message:
I recently looked under the hood of my 97 3.9L V6 Dodge Dakta to see why i am getting such horrible gas mileage(only 11.5mpg). While exploring i found a Holley Throttle body. I bought the truck new and am not sure what the previous owners have done to the truck. i was wondering if anyone knows if that TB is stock or if it truly an aftermarket Holley TB. I have read elsewhere that some Dak(i don't remeber what year or engine size) come with a Holley stock. Thanks for any help, Scott

That is a stock unit. Sweet is'nt it? there could be a number of reasons for your fuel mileage, o2 sensor, need a tune up, to mention a few.

If you bought the truck new, how could there be previous owners? :)

have you noticed anything else besides bad gas milage? acceleration or drivablity issues?

I agree with 02dakota. Start with the basics
check the O2 sensor (diynet.com has instructions)
tune-up : check/replace as necessary cap, rotor, plugs, wires. Do you use any fuel injector cleaner? Seafoam is good. You can also run seafoam in oil. Could be sludge. How many miles? timing chain been replaced?

The stock throttle bodies are all the same whether they have the Holley name on them or not.

I have replaced the plugs, used fuel injector cleaner, and had an oil change but the mileage seems to keep dropping. It runs great though very strong. Like i said it was bough used so i have no clue what the previous owners did to it. It has a clean, FRAM, air filter.

Scott, maybe you should switch your air filter to a high-flow type. It won't solve your problem, but this should help you out somewhat. Just about all the guys here use the K&N air filter. It is kinda pricey ($50), but it is worth it. Fram also makes one called the air hog, or something like that.

I'd look into the new Amsoil air filters...price is pretty close to the K&N, but it outflows it (or is VERY close), yet it filters MUCH better. The K&N's actually don't have great filtration ratings (not to be confused with flow ratings). Although unless you live somewhere really dusty, the K&N wouldn't really be all that detrimental to your truck.

I agree with the above...especially bout the O2 sensor being a good possibility as to the reason why your mpg sucks.

GB2000, how did you get the 10" Edelbrock air filter to fit on ur TB??? Did it require any modifications and does it seal all the way? Looks cool though. I saw somone with a triangle holley and that looked cool but i definately like the idea of a round one like that.
