Alright this has been a problem for a while now, it just has really started to Irk me. The oil pressure drops to less than the halfway mark when idling or cruising with foot off gas, but when I put a load on the engine the pressure increases to around 3/4's or so of the gauge. Is this anything to be worried about?

Sounds normal to me... when you have no oil pressure, that's the time you need to start worrying.

if you doubt the electronic gage in the dash, you could install a mechanical gage to double check it. that's how i've done it before.

Just remember that the oil pump runs off the distributor/cam gearing...which will slow down at idle. So your oil pressure will go up and down with RPM especially when the engine/oil is warm. Like daddio says, if you are that worried about it, check it with a mechanical pressure gauge.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

If it hasn't occurred before and then started with no other changes (changed oil, etc), it could be the sending unit starting to go bad. This is what happened to me. Little fluctuation (normal) got worse over time and eventually bounced all over.

you can test the guage. pull the connector from the oil sending unit and turn the ignition on/engine off, guage should remain low or drop to low side. Jumper wire from pin 1 (tab up, left hand cavity) to ground and turn ignition on/engine off and guage should go high.
