i have a 93 dakota 2wd 256000km engine sounds and runs great. except for a (pinging or a knock)not sure which one it is. only happens if truck sits overnight and its cold next morning.if i let the truck idle for 10min. before driving it it will not ping or knock. if it idles only for a minute or two and then i drive away thats when i hear the noise. but not everytime.as soon as i hear the ping i take my foot off the gas petal. the noise goes away.i continue to drive very slowly for maybe half a km. the noise goes away and the truck runs fine.when it acts up i've tried pulling over putting it in park and give the engine a little rev.it won't ping it only does it in drive under load. it also idles high and low on start up only if its been sitting over night or longer. it seems the longer i let it sit the problem gets worse.i been to three separate machanics changed many parts and the problem is still there. the one thing they agree on is they don't think it is a serious engine problem because it runs very good and an engine problem should get worse when it warms up. also i don't no if its related but in the winter i get VERY poor gas mileage 100 miles to the tank in town.i'm listing parts i have already changed to try and eliminate some posiblities. cap, rotor, plugs, wires, egr valve one year ago machanic notice all plugs were white but said it was not a head gasket. he said it was running lean but not to worry. just in the last couple of weeks i have changed oil pan and pump, cadillac converter, had the throttle body cleaned, and had something cleaned by the intake not sure what it was but the machanic said it wasn't dirty, also new battery six months ago. another thing i'm not sure if its related . i had the brake boaster changed two months ago.after they changed it they noticed the abs light was on.it wasn't on before it was changed. the machanic had a real hard time to get the abs light to go off.i no they had my glove box all apart. so my guess is they were trying to do something with the computer to get the abs light off. i believe they had to call the dodge dealer. and he told them to disconnect something for 15 min. and plug it back in (i assume it was the computer)is it possible if the computer was disconnected and it screwed something up. any help to figure out this problem will be appreciated thank- you also forgot to mention had the water pump and timing chain and tensioner chaged one year ago.

i brought my truck to the shop. machanic says o2 senor is fine. truck hasn't been pinging for almost 2 weeks, since i changed the catalatic converter. truck is still hard on fuel.also now that its winter. i only have heat in truck when driving. while ilding the air stays cool. had same problem last winter. had system back flushed that didn't really help. last winter changed rad and termostat (twice).still no heat when idling as soon as i drive away air goes from cool to hot. i was told to put something infront of the grill to restrict cold air from getting in. is this a good idea.thanks for any advice.

If your belt is old it will get polished to the point where it doesnt effectively turn the water pump at idle making it where you would have no heat at an idle.
Replace the belt and see if that helps.
