Subject: 1989 Dakota poor idle in gear
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1989 Dakota V6 4x4 that starts right up, runs well, and idles fine in park.

When I put it in gear the idle drop down to around 400 rpm from 800 rpm at idle.

From what I read in the Dakota shop manual they
pointed me to the IAC.

Does anyone have any tip/ideas as to how to resolve this problem?

check the speed sensor and the wires, its on the tranfer case, driverside,it has a speedometer cable connected to it too,it tells the pcm if your coming to a stop or idling in gear so the pcm idles it up

could be plugs, wires, cap or rotor button

decode it the problem may throw a code

I have noticed that the MIL light with my 1995 does not always come on when a code is stored. Have you tried the key on sequence to see if any codes were stored?

You can also clean the carbon off of the IAC. Just becareful doing that so as not to twist the plunger. Could also be TPS.
