I have a 94 Dakota club cab, 3.9 automatic, 4x4, with 146,000 miles. I'm getting a speed dependent noise that sounds to me like it's coming from the transfer case. It's basically a louder 'whirring' noise, not a grinding or anything like that. Anybody else with one of these trucks notice a noise like that and trace it back to a particular problem or wear in the transfer case?

could be a pinion bearing in one of the housings making the noise, the sound can travel up the driveshafts

also if you have used 4wd lately the shifter on the transfer may be dry not letting it shift back to 2wd,oil shifter linkage

check front and rear housings and transfer oil levels, top off if low,if oil looks muddy change the oil, this is a sign water got in
