Mopar1 - you could be right about that. I do have some of those symptoms. Since I replaced the IAC, I have yet to have rough idle where I have to give it gas to keep it running. I have found several things wrong already..TPS, IAC, EGR, MAP. I'm taking it in tomorrow. The shop I go to will not charge me to run diagnostics on it and they do good work.

I picked up the truck from the shop today. Took them some time scanning and checking but they found 2 problems.

distributor pickup - intermittent
coil - intermittent fluctuation in voltage

In addition to that i replaced the
MAP - low output voltage
TPS - low output voltage
EGR - hole, vacuum leak
IAC - more a preventative measure

I need to drive a few days to verify no further issues.

Dan,

I assume that was not a dealer shop.
How much did they charge?
Did THEY replace the coil and pickup?
Would that scanner you want have done the same as the shop?

Not a dealer, an independent shop. I found them via jasper engines website, they are a preferred installer. In my opinion any shop that is a preferred installer for Jasper Engines is a good shop to use. This particular shop is dropping installation of other vendor engines due to warranty issues with the vendors and only going to be installing jasper. They installed a non jasper engine in a vehichle and it broke down (not sure of details). The vendor denied the warranty claim and the customer and this shop are in a lawsuit against the vendor. The engine vendor says the breakdown is the fault of the installer. Jasper went to bat for the shop stating they have never denied a warranty claim due to faulty installment from this shop. This is good enough for me to continue using this shop when needed.

For the diagnostic, cost for the pickup and installation of the pick up, it was < $75. I picked up the coil from advance and installed it myself (~ $33) and about 10 minutes (had to liquid wrench / vice grip the screws to get them out).

Not sure if the scanner would have picked up on this or not, it may. I know it would have easily picked up the other sensors I replaced.

Perhaps someone who owns one can chime in. In fact, i think I'll start a thread to see what scanners people use and how they like them.

I know what you mean about those screws.
Why didn't Dodge make them BOLTS??
I discovered alot of things that make me wonder
"Why in hell did they do that?"
Such as the air hat mount that we change to an S-bolt. The Dodge assy has 8 parts, if I remember correctly. Dumb dumb.

I was expecting something like that. nothing is ever a 5 minute job :)

I had to cut the head off of one of the screws that held my TPS in place with my dremel. So far no hesitation or backfiring.

Ok well apparently the problem isn't solved.

Last night on the highway it backfired while driving 70. Today on my way home from work it hesitated and backfired accelerating from a stop light.

Well damn.
Don't you just hate that?
And you've replaced almost everything that was suggested.
Umm...
Does your shop have a laptop setup so you can drive and let the laptop monitor and catch the problem when it happens? Don't ask me for details, I have only seen it on TV.

I'm leaning toward crankshaft position sensor.

According to alldata:

If the PCM does not sense input from the crankshaft position sensor, PCM will deactivate the automatic shutdown relay and fuel pump relay, interrupting voltage to fuel pump, fuel injectors, and ignition coil, (no start condition).

truck died coming to a stop on off ramp. Also, yesterday was hard to start in the morning. I remember a while ago truck would not start, I pulled the relay and tested it fine, put it back in and truck started fine. I wrote that off as a fluke event.

When I get this issue resolved, I'll have replaced half of the truck :)

zzark, i believe a DRB scan tool can monitor while under operating conditions. i'm sure there is software available also. that's about the only way to track down these damn intermittent problems.

Dan M, my truck, every once in a great while, when cold will backfire on acceleration. it's never tripped a code and happens so seldom i hadn't even tried to look into it. i think you're on the right track about the CPS.
