Start by picking up a repair manual at any auto parts dealer.

What he said, one of the best buys for your truck that you can do. But back to the diff, take the plate off of the back. To put oil in, put the plate back on with a new gasket and RTV sealant, and pour the oil in through the hole in the back made by removing the rubber plug.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
