Leakin oil. Its a 1990 with 145,000 miles on it. It leaks real bad around the back end of the engine/start of the tranny. Would switchin oil do any good? i currently use Valvoline 10w-30, and it just poors out. Im thinkin its a rear seal, but i hope theres an easier way out. it just started leakin about 2 months ago. I dont drive it hard or anything. should i run it till it blows? or maybe switch oil?

Thanks in advance!!!

No, if it just pours out, then you rear main seal is already too bad to put a bandaid on. Sorry for the bad news:( Did your truck sit around alot for long periods without anyone driving it? That will dry the seals out fast... I was just wondering due to the fact that you only have 145K on a 16 year old truck.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

No actually, i have driven it just about every day since i bought it, last december. Yeah i meant my rear main seal. I prolly over estimated that it pours out. It prolly leaks about a qt. every two days.

I'd say a quart in couple of days is pretty much a definition of "pours out". I have to agree with cuzindoug, it's bad news. You'll have to take care of it. Adding a quart of oil every two days already costs you and might cost much more with potential damage to the engine.

Thanks yall. But im just wondering how much it would cost to get the main rear seal fixed? I mean yes im a Dodge man, but i dont wanna pay a whole crap load of money, when my uncle is willing to make a me a great deal on Chevy S-10. I love my ole Dakota, and i love workin on her. I just bought a set of flowmasters, and i was going to put em on sunday. I also am supposed to get my truck painted "mopar" orange sometime next week. But now im just pondering should i go ahead and pull the cord, and junk her?

Will, it does not make sense to junk the truck whenever you run into some trouble. It happens, it will happen and it might as well happen with your uncle S-10. You apparently love the truck, you were planning to invest stuff, paint it etc. The paint job itself probably will cost more that seal replacement. So just get the quote, maybe postpone the paint job and keep taking care of her.

Thanks man. I really dont want the s-10, i just wanna work on the Dakota. I'll prolly ask a friends dad to take a look at it. A couple of friends of mine think it would only take about $300.00 to fix. I reckon i will wait to get the truck painted. Oh another thing that i meant to ask is, i live in KY and i dont think we have any strict emission laws, so takin the CC off wouldnt hurt anything right? i know my O2 sensors run through it. I wanna put those Flowmasters on, cause all i have right now is a glasspack and its too ricey for me.

Thanks,
Will

before you buy/change the rear main seal,
check the oil sending unit, rear of the intake manifold gasket and the dist to see if any of these are leaking oil,all are in the same area[back of motor]just top side

if it's leaking a quart in 2 days, i'd look at the oil sending unit. what does your oil pressure gage read? if it's not working that's probably the culprit.

the rear main seal wouldn't be that bad. you would have to drop the tranny & the oilpan though.

i had an '83 GMC S-15 that leaked from the rear main seal @ 28k miles. the dealer toook care of it. it seems there was a factory defect in the way they cut the crankshaft that caused the leak. the fix lasted until 32k miles and the dealer had to "fix" it again. that fix hedl until i sold it @ 150k.

no my oil guage does not work properly. I will check this out this morning. autozone.com says its UNDER HOOD, CENTER, UPPER ENGINE AREA, PASSENGER SIDE
OF DISTRIBUTOR, MOUNTED IN BLOCK. What should i look for, to tell its bad? and if its bad how hard and how much does a Oil sending unit cost?

it's right near the distributor on the bacj of the engine. i wouldn't think it could be more than 30 bucks. some require a special socket but A/Z should be able to loan you one.

Well i still havent gotten around to doing it, cause its been pourin rain and i been workin so much. Well the day i was goin to try to change it. I freakin notice that someone stole my CD player, subs, and amp. Talk about being po'd. Wednesday i plan on changing it and seeing if that works. My truck's oil guage just stoped workin, so i do agree thats prolly the problem.

Thanks guys..

My truck had a leak like yours and I thought it was the rear main seal, so I took it to the garage and they washed it up and it turned out to be the valve cover gaskets were cracked and leaking. Once they were replaced no more leak. Might want to have a look at that.

Thanks,
