well, i'm glad to see another dak get one! man i love the thing...It is such a blast to drive...with the 5-speed it makes it a bit more difficult to drive in parking lots but all the more fun...i like to say that it keeps people from driving my dak!

can i ask you one thing...everyonce in a while i will be at a light and when i go to pull out the clutch the locker will slip and make a "med-to high pitch matalic" sound. has yours done that yet...trying to figure out if i should talk to powertrax about it...i have full confidence in this piece though! it makes a work a differnce...now for my 3.90 gears!!! hopefully by the end of the month... :)

no, they are pretty strong rearends... i think bernd shot his when he has 32" tires on his truck. but when i do get traction we will find out! my brother has 37.5" tires on his chebby and he just welded the rear spider gears to the together (or whatever you do) to have a locking diff. if it works for him well enough (if he doesnt brake it within 3 mudding trips) then i might just go cheap@ss and do that. not as reliable but i can work.

nobody going to donate? just skip church one week and send me whatever you would put in the basket! he he he. thank you for your time and generous donations!;)

UPDATE!!!! WWWAAAAYYY TO sloppy for me after driving it for awhile,I'm going to take it out next week if it doesn't get any better. Real hard to turn in parking lots. For highway drive'n and with an auto trans. it might be better. I have a 5-spd. and do a lot of short trips(to much slap'n and jerk'n).when i just put it in there was hardly any noise(a few clicks and pops but nothing real bad)then that went away. they say it takes a "...nominal 50-mile break in period."but its really lose for a 5-spd. on my dak. anyway. You can really feel the under-steer going down the highway when you nail it!The tire chirp in turns is cool,as long as you don't make a perfect circle, then it starts to slap and jerk.Like i said it's real easy to put in, awsome off the start(going stright)it grabs like hell, front comes up, back goes down, and away you go!!!BUT, I don't know we'll see by next week end!

P.S. hope this helps for anyone thinking about it!

it probably will, but an auto will keep the backlash out so the slap and jerk wont be as bad do to the trans. is always push'n.so in and out of the gas wont make it slap like a 5-spd. like mine. i think an auto trans would be great with one of these.it only does that crazy stuff when you turn really sharp and gas it.(left or right all the way).

i'll look back later.

YES it does make some noise and it's a bit tough to drive in parking lots...and i have had a few people say that the rear sounds like it's in pieces already...then i tell them what i got...they just say oh... :) BUT I LOVE IT!!! in parking lots you have to use second where you would normally use first and so on...also it's nice to have your foot on the clutch for when the locker goes in and out on a turn (almost looks like your truck has hydrolics) another trick i found is during sharp turns you can "play" with the clutch a little...if the truck starts to jump then push the clutch in a little...this usually helps.

also, the locker doesn't lock in turns if you drive normal around turns...not 30mph.

a few people with auto's are on the dml (dakota mailing list) and they say it doesn't pop so much...

maybe i was a little hard on it at first, but it's getting better.i put 50 miles on it. it might take a little more getting used to. i completly understand not everybody does real tight turns all the time.(in parking lots) i guess i was testing it to much and getting on it to hard. i'll just drive it easy and normal till next weekend.

P.S. do you think putting a higher viscosity lub in it will help?cold weather, hot weather i know, but maybe it will tighten it up?

Cecil, I've been saying how good our Powertrax NS diff works and I gotta tell ya it sounds like something might be wrong with yours. Yes we do have an automatic so that takes out some slop, but, your diff should fully disengage when making turns in a parking lot! What wieght diff lube are you using? The lighter the lube the better it will work (I would definitely recommend synthetic lube)! If you got any questions just let me know!

if you think synthetic will help i'll try it.it just seems really sloppy to me.

Yeah, SOME slop is expected(I think the instructions included with it says to expect more backlash with a standard trans). I can tell you from experience that our '70 PowerWagon-which is a stick-has more backlash and has a OEM limited-slip! The synthetic lube should help it, but, it took ours about 200 miles before it felt much smoother.

I use synthetic gear lube...same weight as stock just synthetic... also it is not set up wrong...the 5-speed has a bit of slack in it...you need to get used to it...yes the first few times i had it out i was a bit nervious about it but after some time it's great...put a few more weeks on it...then decide if you don't like it...also after 3 months change the gear lube...this will clean out any small metals that have chiped off...since it's new...

one thing to caution you about is...DON'T drop the clutch if you don't have the slack taken out...the best way to descibe it is slowely take out the clutch until your truck wants to move foward but doesn't...then push in the clutch. your slack is taken up...now you can mash it...if you dropped the clutch with out taking out the slack you could break something and if nothing else just spin those rear wheels...not good...understand?

if not let me know...i will try to descibe it a bit better...

Cecil,

Well, I have a Hurst shifter so I can't say that. Also our trannies are a bit tougher than an average car...IT'S A TRUCK TRANNY! Also I have redline oil's synthetic tranny fluid in...And lastly I think my tranny is a little easier to shift than others...several others have said the same thing about my truck. It’s hard to say...like I said drive it for a bit...if you hear a whining sound as you shift try to shift then it's your synchronizing clutches that are trying to get the tranny to spin as fast as the wheels...this may be the cause...EX: if you are going 30-35 and you push in the clutch hold it in let the rpm's drop and then try to shift into second...you will hear the clutches whining...DON'T LET OUT THE CLUTCH! This maybe what you are experiencing...hard to tell...drive it for another day and then let me know more detailed of exactly when it happens...then I can try and recreate it in mine...

As for the loud bang...yes sometimes that happens...I think it is when you have a bit of pressure on the drive train (accelerating) and you push the clutch in...the rearend and wheels are still trying to go forward but your drive shaft/tranny are stopped (or slower). it is taking up the slack and then making that noise...same idea as I said last time about not dropping the clutch with slack...turn it around. I don't think this is causing any damage though...

.... that is so cool! don't even know what it does but wants it anyway.

it's a locker that locks under full throttle acceleration or when a wheel slips free.... but the bonus part about it is that it will disengage when you turn... you get the benefits of a locker and an open diff.

P.S. telling which tranny i have is unclear, the tag on it is not visable(98 3.9L 5-spd.)book is unclear, is there any hardcore way of telling?
