This coming Feb. I have to have the smog check done on my Dakota. Its a 89 with 180K. I bought it at 77K and haven't changed the Cat or 02 sensor. I'm wondering if I change my equipment before the smog check is done, would this upset or disqualify me from passing. I mean, has any one out there, possibly from california, had a bad experience with the smog checkers due to simply fixing your own car? Does everything have to be returned to stock in replacing it? Any advice in passing the smog in california?
all and any comments welcome :)

Matt,
changing your O2 can only help with the smog check. Also, as 89 model, your truck may be eligible for state assistance up to $500 in case you fail the check. You know if you're eligible if your registration requires "Test Only" smog check. Last year my son's 87 Dakota failed smog check. I filed the application, got approved and directed to repair facility and truck was repaired and paid for by state of California ($360 bill for replacing bad o2).

As above - it will probably help the truck pass the test - They will not know who did the work ..
Only thing is - if truck needs more work to pass -
you may have to pay out more then .
Although , at least you would be more
' friendly ' to your environment !!
Any ' cat ' should meet spec's ..
" Noisy " mufflers may not !!

Thats actually some really good information to know. I guess I'll use the granted $500 only if I need to. But thanks! for the advice.
