i have been custom boring 48mm tbs for a few months now. so far, it has been the best mod that i have done. not only have i gotten better top end power and gas mileage, i really havent noticed a loss in low end. from the feedback that i have gotten from my customers and there experience, they have noticed the same things.

5.2 TB installed awhile ago. I am extremely happy with it. Better gas mileage, better mid and top end. I notice a small lose of the low end, but with my modified intake, I hope to regain it.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

A big loss in low end power, but a few more ponies up top. Didn't see any change in gas mileage. I have a 3:55 ratio rear so maybe that has something to do with it.
You guys have been talking about a 46 mm TB, I have a 42 mm TB stock, when did they put the 46 mm's on and who has one. Maybe that is the middle ground size that would work best.

Had th F&B 48mm TB on a 99cc 4x4 and it did NOTHING!!!!! No improvements no loss. My top speed with the F&B was 97MPH. when I put my stock back on because I sold the F&B I hit 103 and was still climbing. You tell me what one is better.

daddio, you have a 5 speed, maybe that is what makes the difference. I have to agree with dakotared, it was no good on the bottom end at all and not too much up top.... well not too much to be excited about.

I've got an automatic and 3.55 gears and was very pleased with the V8 body - I think low end was slightly better (but I can't swear to it), mid and top was WAY better.

I've got one of Dave's bored 48mm, and have been happy with it. Engine is running smother and with less effort in the higher rpms. I haven't noticed a loss in the low end. As for mileage, I have not been able to check the numbers yet and there is still some lead in the foot as well. I do have a 2wd as well.

I have tried extensive thottle body test ing on my v6:
1st v8 throttle body noticeable results.

2nd Fastman 46mm Throttlebody no noticeable difference between it and v8 tb.

3rd 47mm Sick Throttlebody slightly more performance than the fastman.

4th I tried a custom 49mm Throttlebody best high rpm performance, but noticeable low end rpm loss.

5th 48mm F&B so the best I tried the right balance for low end torque and increase in power.

To get the most out of a larger Throttle body use a cold air intake, enlarge the opening on the intake manifold and port match to the heads. Consider adding 1.7 roller rockers.

On the exhaust side add, a low restriction muffler and cat. convertor. You may want to consider headers or manifolds from a 1992 or 1993 3.9 dak. The larger exhaust ports flow close to JBA headers.

In conclusion, the best size Throttle body for the v6 is a 48mm custom bore like daveshotdako,
or a v8 TB or F&B if you want the best. The v8 TB flows about 630 cfm and a F&B about 660 cfm. 600 cfm for a stock or slightly modified v6 is more than enough air flow. Consider this the v6 TB helps the 318 (5.2) and 360 (5.9) produce about 230 and 240 hp. depending on year. If 600 cfm is good enough for a stock v8, it should be plently for the v6.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

1998 CC V6 5 Speed 4x4

When I put a V8 tb on, I noticed quite an improvement. Beyond the difference in "feel" which could be psychological, I noticed much better hill climbing performance. I have a Raven II camper shell that's a few inches taller than the cab, and I typically load up with quite a bit of camping gear, wood, 120qt cooler full of ice and barly pop, grill, propane tanks, etc and head to the "high country". I figured that living above 6000 feet and typically camping at around 8000+ feet elevation the engine needs all the air it can get. I have a K&N cone filter clamped right onto the air hat, I will do the full cold air ducting when I get around to it. After swapping in the V8 tb, I no longer have to downshift getting up a lot of the inclines that used to bog me down. I have not noticed any low end loss. My last trip down to Denver and back I got just over 22mpg going 80-85 miles per hour, with all my gear loaded. I'm curious to see what kind of performance I'll get if/when I ever go down to the "lowlands". Denver is typically the lowest elevation I ever drive to. For about the price of a tank of gas and about an hour of my time, the throttle body swap was a very worthwhile improvement.

daveshotdako, When spare money allows, a TB upgrade is the next thing on my list. I have an '03 3.9. When you bore a TB, do you also replace the butterflies to match the new bore size or is it a taper bore the allows the use of the stock butterflies?

WyomingPurple, Thats good mileage considering you have a 4x4 v6 3.9. 22 at 80 to 85 mph is very good mileage. If you haven't removed the airhorns off the top of the throttle plate in lets you may want to do it. When I put the v8 TB on my truck I noticed improvement and even after modifying the top. Good spring project in Big Wonderful Wyoming. I hear Wyoming is like a good pair of well worn shorts yellow and brown.

Ok, This wasnt the brightest idea i've ever had but i had been waiting and waitin for the V8 TB cable for about a month..I had the TB it self for over a month and well I finally got a cable....about 3 days before i was deploying. So since everyone says its a 30 min job I went ahead and did it. Now im not a mechanic but it was pretty easy..except trying to get the Cable through the Fire wall, that was a biatch.
Anyway. Started the old Dak up, and let it idle for about 5 mins, and took off down the road. I could tell imidiately that i had better throttle response and better pickup at all RPMs and in every gear. About 2 miles down the road...is when the Check engine Light came on. But instead of spending any more time figureing out what was wrong i had to spend time with the wife since i'm gone for 4 months. I think its just a vacume leak but i wont be able to find out till i get back...in Feb 06. The vacume line coming off the MPS was/is really torn/cracked and im pretty sure i did more harm to it when i disconnected it. Hopefully thats what it is.

oh its a 5 speed 1997cc, 4X4, 3.9,

cheers,
Mac

Sorry about the misprint in my last post. The vacume line in question was from the MAP sensor...
